Question

What are the steps for a Push or Pull Installation of the Altiris Agent?

Answer

For Altiris Agent Requirements, see article 25901, "Basic requirements for the Altiris Agent."

Altiris Agent Push Installation

This section provides information for performing an Altiris Agent Push installation. This installation lets you install the Altiris Agent to your client computers from the Notification Server. In other words, there is no need to be at the client computer to install the Altiris Agent. You can specify which computers to push the installation to. The Notification Server then downloads and installs the Altiris Agent to all designated computers.

Note: If you are pushing to a computer with an Altiris Agent installed but pointing to a different Notification Server, the status on this page may not be updated properly.

Prerequisites
To push the Altiris Agent to a computer, the following must apply:

  • The target computer must be running Windows NT/2000/XP/2003.
  • The Admin$ share must exist on the target computer.
  • The security identity of the Notification Server is an account that needs administrative rights on the target computer. However, credentials can be specified during the Push installation in the popup options.

To initiate an Altiris Agent Push installation

  1. Discover the computers on which you want to install the Altiris Agent. See article 30723, "Discover Computers with Resource Discovery Page."
  2. From the Altiris Console, click the Configuration tab.
  3. In the left pane, navigate to Configuration > Altiris Agent > Altiris Agent Rollout.
  4. Click Altiris Agent Installation.
  5. Select already discovered computers (if desired). Selected computers will be added to the table.
    1. In the content pane, click Select Computers.
    2. In the Select Computers window, select one of the following in the drop-down menu:

Discovered computers not reporting inventory: Lists the computers that have been discovered but are not reporting inventory. These are computers that either haven’t had the Altiris Agent installed on them or are in the process of having the Altiris Agent installed on them.

Discovered computers sorted by date: Lists all discovered computers sorted by date.

Discovered computers with no registered Altiris Agent: Lists discovered computers that have the Altiris Agent installed but are not yet registered with the Notification Server.

Push (Altiris Agent) install failed: Lists all discovered computers where the Push installation failed.

Discovered computers with Altiris Agent: Lists all discovered computers that have the Altiris Agent already installed.

Altiris Agent installed other than push method: Lists all discovered computers that have the Altiris Agent already installed where the installation method performed was not Push.
    3. In the Select Computers window, select one or more computers to which you want to install the Altiris Agent.
    4. Click OK.
  6. Enter names of individual computers. Entered computers will be added to the table.
    1. Enter a name of the computer in the field next to the Add button.
    2. Click Add.
  7. From the list of the computers, select the computers to which you want to install the Altiris Agent, and then click Install Altiris Agent.
  8. Select none, some, or all of the following:
    • Show the Altiris Agent icon in the Start menu: Select if you want the Altiris Agent icon displayed in the start menu.
    • Show the Altiris Agent icon in the system tray: Select if you want the Altiris Agent icon displayed in the system tray. This setting may be overridden by the Altiris Agent Settings after the Altiris Agent is installed. This just sets the initial Altiris Agent behavior.
    • Use proxy (if configured on target computer): Select to use the proxy if it is configured on the Altiris Agent.
    • Override the default installation path: Select this and enter the desired installation path. By default, the Altiris Agent will be installed to the install path\Altiris\Altiris Agent directory on the same drive as the %WINDIR% directory.
    • Specify different Notification Server: Select this and enter the name of another Notification Server to which you want the Altiris Agents reporting.
    • List the Altiris Agent in the Add or Remove Programs list: Select to list the Altiris Agent in the Add or Remove Programs list on the target computer.
    • Use the following admin account: Select this to use another administrators account and provide a valid user name and password.
    • Additional parameters: Enter any parameters needed for the installation.
  9. Click Save Settings.
  10. Click Proceed with Install.

Note: To see if the installation was successful, you can run the Altiris Agent basic inventory (sorted by last update) report. The Altiris Agent sends basic inventory soon after it is installed which shows managed computers that have recently sent basic inventory. This report can be found in the Altiris Console by clicking the Reports tab and then in the left pane, navigating to Altiris Configuration > Reports > NS Client Inventory.

Note: You can examine managed computer information in Resource Manager by double-clicking on the computer name in this list. The first time you try to access Resource Manager this way, if grid control is not installed, it will install automatically. Click Back on your browser and double-click on the computer name again to access Resource Manager.

Altiris Agent Pull Installation

This type of installation is initiated from the desired client computer. The advantage of this method is that it works with a target computer running any Windows 32-bit operating system. The disadvantage to using this instead of pushing the Altiris Agent is that this procedure must be started separately from each computer.

The Altiris Agent installation is run under the security ID of the user initiating the Pull. If the user initializing the Pull is using Windows NT/2000/XP/2003, they must have administrator rights to complete the Altiris Agent installation. On Windows NT, if you do not have sufficient rights and you try to install the Altiris Agent, you will get an iKernal 800 error.

Note: The minimum required version of Internet Explorer, for Pull Installation, is 5.5.

Performing an Altiris Agent Pull installation

  1. From the Altiris Console, click the Configuration tab.
  2. In the left pane, navigate to Configuration > Altiris Agent > Altiris Agent Rollout.
  3. Select Altiris Agent Installation.
  4. View the URL of the download page in the field under URL of download page for Win32 users. You can e-mail this URL to your managed computer users. This URL page will lead your users through the installation of the Altiris Agent package onto their computers.
  5. Click Show me this page to view the download page that you will send to the managed computer users.

Initiating an Altiris Agent Pull installation from a computer

  1. Using a Web browser on a target computer, go to the following URL: http://NSName: 80/Altiris/NS/Agent/AltirisAgentDownload.aspx where NSName is the name of your Notification Server computer.
Note: This application leads you through the installation of the Altiris Agent.
  2. Click on Click here to begin downloading the Altiris Agent bootstrap program.
