Performing a rolling upgrade of SF Oracle RAC global cluster to version 6.0

You can perform the rolling upgrade on systems running SF Oracle RAC 5.1 and later.

For system requirements, see the 6.0 Veritas Storage Foundation for Oracle RAC Installation and Configuration Guide. This procedure describes how to perform a rolling upgrade of SF Oracle RAC global cluster that uses Veritas Volume Replicator (VVR) for replication.

Consider a two-node SF Oracle RAC cluster on each site with the nodes galaxy and nebula on the primary site and the nodes jupiter and mercury on the secondary site. Perform the upgrade on the secondary site and then the primary site. The strategy to perform rolling upgrade on each site is as follows:

  • Phase1: Split the cluster into two subclusters and upgrade the nodes on each subcluster. During this phase, the installer upgrades the kernel packages. For example, on the secondary site, the node jupiter constitutes the first subcluster and the node mercury constitutes the second subcluster.

  • Phase2: Upgrade all the nodes of the cluster on the site. During this phase, the installer upgrades the non-kernel packages.

Note:

This procedure does not involve down time for running applications. Some down time may be experienced during replication when you fail over the replication service group from the first half of the cluster to second half of the cluster. Likewise, when you switch the replication service group from the second half of the cluster to the first half of the cluster.

Perform the following tasks in the order specified:

Upgrading the secondary site of SF Oracle RAC global cluster

Upgrading the primary site of SF Oracle RAC global cluster
