How do I create a file association?

Answer

Create a file association if your application generates documents with a unique file extension. Then, when a user double-clicks that document file, the operating system launches the associated program and opens the file.

To create a file extension using the Wise Installation System 9, Wise for Windows Installer Professional (Professional and Enterprise Editions), Wise Installation Studio 7's WiseScript Package Editor or Wise Package Studio WiseScript Editor (Professional and Enterprise Editions), do the following:

  1. Select the Installation Expert from the View menu or the Navigation bar.
  2. Ensure that the executable file (.exe) with which you want to create a file association is one of the files installed with your package. (Add the file on the Files page if necessary.)
  3. Select the File Associations page from the Installation Details page group.
  4. Click Add at the bottom of the page.
  5. Select the desired .exe file from the Select File from Installation dialog.
  6. Enter the three letter extension you wish to associate with the .exe in the small edit box labeled Three letter document extension.
  7. Click OK.

To create a file extension using version 8 products and Install Manager, do the following:

  1. Select the Installation Expert from the View menu or the Navigation bar.
  2. Ensure that the executable file (.exe) with which you want to create a file association is one of the files installed with your package. (Add the file on the Files page if necessary.)
  3. Select the File Types page (step 2, system additions)
  4. Select Add at the bottom of the page.
  5. Select the desired .exe file from the Select File from Installation dialog.
  6. Enter the three letter extension you wish to associate with the .exe in the small edit box labeled Three letter document extension.
  7. Click OK.

To create a file extension using InstallMaster 7.0x and InstallBuilder 7.0x, do the following:

  1. Select the Installation Expert from the View menu or the Navigation bar.
  2. Ensure that the executable file (.exe) with which you want to create a file association is one of the files installed with your package. (Add the file on the Files page if necessary.)
  3. Select the Document Types page (step 2, system additions)
  4. Select Add at the bottom of the page.
  5. Select the desired .exe file from the Select File from Installation dialog.
  6. Enter the three letter extension you wish to associate with the .exe in the small edit box labeled Three letter document extension.
  7. Click OK.
