Problem
Issue: Upgrading the Software Virtualization Solution 2.1 Control Panel Applet.

Following an upgrade of the Software Virtualization Solution Agent, the Software Virtualization Solution Control Panel Applet feature is not available.

Note: This issue is only known to occur with upgrades. The Software Virtualization Solution Control Panel Applet feature installs correctly during new installations.

Environment
Occurs when upgrading the Software Virtualization Solution Agent 2.1.

Resolution

Adding the Control Panel Applet using a Notification Server Task/Policy

  1. From the Configuration tab in the Altiris Console, go to Solution Settings > Software Settings > Software Management > Software Virtualization.
  2. Select Software Virtualization.
  3. Select Software Virtualization Agent Package.
  4. Select the Programs tab.
  5. Click the New button (located to the right of the Program name field).
  6. Enter Name and Description information.  Example:  SVS Control Panel Applet Installation.
  7. Enter the following into the Command Line field (all on one line):
    Msiexec.exe /qb /I Software_Virtualization_Agent.msi PRODUCT_KEY=(Enter Product Key Here) INSTALL_ADMIN=1 INSTALL_CONTROL_PANEL_APPLET=1
  8. Click Apply.
  9. Download attached .XML file from this KB article.
  10. Right-click on the Software Virtualization Agent Rollout folder and select Import.
  11. In the Program name drop-down menu, select the program you created (Example:  SVS Control Panel Applet Installation).
  12. Select the desired collection to which you wish to apply the task/policy.
  13. Mark the Enable checkbox and click Apply to execute the task/policy.

Adding the Control Panel Applet from the Command Line

To do this run:

msiexec.exe /i "C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Software Delivery\{B494B38C-306E-4CC8-A5D2-C33E382BA863}\cache\software_virtualization_agent.msi" ADDLOCAL=SVS_Control_Panel_Applet PRODUCT_KEY=(Product Key Here) /qb

Note: The folder {B494B38C-306E-4CC8-A5D2-C33E382BA863} (referenced above) represents a unique folder name. This folder name is computer specific and will therefore be different on your computer. You will need to locate this folder on your system and record the actual folder name.

Adding the Control Panel Applet from Windows Add or Remove Programs

You can also install the SVS Control Panel Applet Feature from the Windows Add or Remove Programs applet. However, there is an additional registration step that is required. For this reason it is recomended that you add the Control Panel applet using either with a Notification Server policy or the Command Line method as described above.

  1. Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.
  2. Select Altiris Software Virtualization Solution Agent.
  3. Click Change.
  4. Select Modify.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Expand the Complete feature. The SVS Control Panel Applet feature is unavailable.
  7. Click the control button to the left of the SVS Control Panel Applet feature.
  8. Select your desired installation option.
  9. Click Next.
  10. Click Next.
  11. Click Finish.
  12. Launch The Control Panel Applet

After you launch the Applet, the New button is disabled. This is because the Product Registration key has been removed during installation. You must now manually re-enter the key by selecting the Register button on the About tab.
Due to the need of entering the Product Registration Key, with this workaround, we highly recommend that you use the command line installation method when possible.
