Recommendations for upgrading an RMS deployment to CCS 11.0

If you are using RMS to collect asset data, following are the recommendations for upgrading to CCS.

  • On the RMS Information Server, open the registry editor and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Bindview\BV-Control for Unix and set the value of the key MaxThreads to 10. Then perform the remote upgrade to BV-Control for UNIX agents. See Performing a remote upgrade of BV-Control for UNIX agents.

  • For agent-less raw-data collection:

    • In your existing deployment, if you are collecting data from Windows computers, you may have Query Engines performing data collection in a domain. If the computer that hosts the Query Engine matches the recommended hardware for CCS Manager, you can install a CCS Manager on an existing Query Engine. Or you can replace a group of low hardware configuration Query Engine computers with a single high hardware configuration CCS manager computer.

You can replace 5 Query Engines each of 2GB RAM with 1 CCS Manager of 8GB RAM and 16 logical processors.

      Note:

If the hardware configuration of the computer that hosts the Query Engine is below 8GB RAM and 8 logical processors, Symantec recommends not to install a CCS Manager on such computer for agent-less data collection.

    • In your existing deployment, if you are collecting data from platforms such as UNIX, SQL and Oracle, you can upgrade your existing Data Processing server (DPS) and RMS Information Server to CCS Manager. The CCS Manager configuration should be as per the sizing guidelines.

    • If there are multiple CCS Managers in Collector role, for effective load balancing use routing rules to route the assets during the data collection.

    • Symantec recommends to deploy an additional CCS Manager for a monthly compliance cycle of every 10000 Assets.

    • Deployment of additional CCS Manager of same configuration increases the performance of agent-less data collection by 60 %.

  • For agent-based raw-data collection:

    • In your existing deployment, if you are collecting data using BV-Control for UNIX agents, you can upgrade your existing Data Processing server (DPS) and RMS Information Server to CCS Manager. The CCS Manager configuration should be as per the sizing guidelines.

For agent-based raw-data collection on UNIX, you can deploy 1 CCS Manager for every 4000 CCS Agents.

    • You can also perform agent-based data collection on platforms such as Windows, SQL and Oracle.

For agent-based raw-data collection on Windows, you can deploy 1 CCS Manager for every 6000 CCS Agents.
