Storage allocation and chargeback reports in Veritas Operations Manager Enterprise Server 5.0

Veritas Operations Manager Enterprise Server storage allocation and chargeback reports show the allocation of array storage to hosts by tiers, and storage allocation costs.

Table: Storage allocation and chargeback reports

Name

Description

Arrays Allocating Storage to Hosts

Shows the host to which each array allocates storage, and the amount of storage that is allocated.

Arrays Allocating Tiered Storage

Shows the amount of storage that each array has allocated (by storage tier).

Cluster Allocated Storage by Array

Shows which arrays are providing storage to clusters and how much storage is being allocated. The Cluster-Aware Allocated Capacity column takes into consideration shared storage visible on multiple cluster nodes. For example, if the same SAN storage is visible to multiple cluster nodes, the Cluster-Aware Allocated Capacity column only counts that storage once to avoid double-counting. The report only accounts for SAN storage allocated to clusters/nodes and specifically excludes any internal storage in the cluster nodes.

Enterprise Storage Visibility

Aggregates information for all direct-attached, enclosed, and unenclosed storage in the enterprise.

The Enterprise Storage Visibility Report report shows the following storage-related information:

  • How much is configured for use (logical storage)

  • How much is available for provisioning to hosts

  • How much is masked to hosts

  • How much is claimed by hosts

  • How much is being used and under-utilized

Note:

Claimed means that the host has created a device handle for a LUN.

The enterprise visibility chart starts with physical storage in arrays and breaks down the storage into progressively smaller classifications.

Host Chargeback Detail

Shows the LUNs allocated to a specific host. It also shows how much a LUN costs based on its storage tier. If a LUN is allocated to multiple hosts, it is important to see the total cost of the LUN distributed across the number of hosts that have access to that LUN. This figure is found in the Distributed Cost column. If the distributed cost and total LUN cost are equal, it means that a LUN is allocated to one specific host.

Host Chargeback Summary

Shows the amount of storage that is allocated to each host, broken down by tier.

The Host Chargeback Summary report includes the following cost values:

  • The Total Cost is the amount each host would be charged if the cost of each allocated LUN were charged to that host, regardless of how many hosts use that LUN.

  • The Distributed Cost shows the total cost of the LUNs distributed across the number of hosts that have access to that LUN. If a LUN has been allocated to multiple hosts, it is important to see the distributed cost.

If the distributed cost and total LUN cost are equal, that host has only been allocated unique LUNs.

Host Storage Allocation Detail

Shows which LUNs are allocated to a specific host. It also shows the historical trend of tiered storage that is allocated to a host.

Host Storage Allocation Summary

Shows the amount of allocated storage (in gigabytes) given to a host.

Hosts with Allocated Tiered Storage

Shows the amount of storage has that is allocated to each host (by tier).

NAS Chargeback Detail

Shows the shares along with their NAS file system and their capacities for the drilled down host from NAS Chargeback summary report. You can filter the report to use used or allocated capacities. You can scope the report by a specific host.

NAS Chargeback Summary

Helps you chargeback the hosts in terms of their NAS usage capacities. It aggregates the NAS file system capacities of the shares which are exported to the host. Capacities are shown per host per filer . You can filter the report to use distributed capacities or to use used or allocated capacities. You can drill down on the host to get the details of the shares consumed by this host.

SAN Chargeback Details

Shows charge for the storage that is allocated to a specific host or cluster. You can also determine the cost by storage tier and per LUN. The Total Cost column shows the amount that is charged to the host or cluster, if the cost of each allocated LUN is charged to that host or cluster.

SAN Chargeback Summary

Shows charge for the storage that is allocated to hosts and clusters, broken down by storage tier. The Total Cost column shows the amount that is charged to the host or cluster, if the cost of each allocated LUN is charged to that host or cluster.

Tiered Storage Summary

Shows how well you use your total tiered array storage.

The Tiered Storage Summary report shows utilization as follows:

  • Allocated. The aggregate of all the usable capacity for LUNs allocated (masked) directly to hosts. Usable capacity is the storage that is configured but not reserved for overhead.

  • Unallocated. The aggregate of all the usable capacity for LUNs that have not yet been allocated (masked) directly to hosts. Usable capacity is the storage that is configured but not reserved for overhead.

Virtual Machine Chargeback Summary

Shows the amount of storage that is allocated to each virtual machine, broken down by type of storage. The Cost column refers to the amount each virtual machine would be charged for.

Capacities and cost are calculated according to your selections for the following options:

  • Cluster Aware: If a LUN has been allocated to multiple virtual machines, selecting Yes means that the capacity and cost columns will reflect the distributed values. By default, the report is cluster aware.

  • Thin Aware: If a thin LUN has been allocated to a virtual machine, selecting Yes means that the capacity and cost columns will reflect the consumed capacity values. This would include thin LUNs from array as well as virtualization.

  • Include DAS: If direct attached storage (DAS) has been allocated to a virtual machine, selecting Yes means that DAS LUNs will be included in the chargeback calculation.

  • Virtualization Technology: You can limit the report scope by selecting a virtualization technology from the list (for example, VMware, LDOM). All will show all virtualization technologies.

VMware Virtual Machine Chargeback Summary

Shows the amount of storage that is allocated to each VMware virtual machine, broken down by type of storage.

This would include thin LUNs from an array as well as VMware virtualization.

  • Include DAS: If direct attached storage has been allocated to a virtual machine, selecting Yes means that DAS LUNs will be included in the chargeback calculation.

  • Include Snapshot Consumed Size: If Thin Aware is set to No, VMware snapshot disks are excluded from this report. Selecting 'Yes means that the report will additionally the consumed size of snapshot disks in capacity and cost values. If Thin Aware is set to Yes, this option is not applicable as snapshot disks are already considered while calculating thin aware capacities.
