How to manually calculate load statistics for Symantec Scan Engine 5.x with Microsoft Excel

  1. Copy .dat files as .csv files.
  2. For daily statistics, open each .csv file with Microsoft Excel.
  3. For statistics across a range of dates, concatenate multiple .csv files together, then open the resulting .csv file in Microsoft Excel.
  4. Calculate the Total Files Scanned.
  5. Identify the highest TFS/min
  6. Calculate the Total MB Scanned.
  7. Identify the highest MBS/min
  8. Repeat steps for each .csv file you wish to check.



To copy .dat files as .csv files

  1. Click Start> Run
  2. Type: cmd
  3. At the cmd prompt, use the cd command to navigate to the folder containing the .dat files you seek to analyze.
  4. At the cmd prompt, type:
    copy *.dat *.csv



To calculate the Total Files Scanned (TFS)

  1. On your keyboard, press <CTRL><End> to jump to the end of the file.
  2. Click the bottom cell of the N column.
  3. Press <SHIFT><CTRL><Home>
  4. Press <SHIFT><right arrow> repeatedly, until only the N column is highlighted.
  5. On the bottom frame of Excel, note the Sum:



To identify the highest TFS/minute

  1. With the N column still highlighted, click Sort & Filter
  2. Click Sort Smallest to Largest
  3. When the Sort Warning dialog box appears, click Sort.
  4. Note the bottom most number on the N column.
  5. If desired, follow this row over to the left to find the epoch time for the minute this load occurred.



To calculate the Total MB Scanned (MBS)

  1. On your keyboard, press <CTRL><End> to jump to the end of the file.
  2. Click the bottom cell of the Q column.
  3. Press <SHIFT><CTRL><Home>
  4. Press <SHIFT><right arrow> repeatedly, until only the Q column is highlighted.
  5. On the bottom frame of Excel, note the Sum:



To identify the highest MBS/min

  1. With the Q column still highlighted, click Sort & Filter
  2. Click Sort Smallest to Largest
