If you install Symantec Insight for Private Clouds Endpoint Edition in your network, you must configure Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM) to communicate with your private Insight server. The documentation that is provided with Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) version 12.1.3 (12.1 RU3) does not provide information on private Insight servers or describe how to configure Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager for this communication.

Note: Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition does not support private Insight servers.

To configure the clients in your network to use a private Insight server

  1. In the console, on the Admin tab, click Servers.
  2. Under Servers, select the site.
  3. Under Tasks, select Edit Site Properties.
  4. On the Private Insight Server tab, check Enable private Insight server.
  5. Enter a name for the private Insight server. You can enter an optional description.
  6. Enter the server URL and the port number. You must format the server URL as follows:

    Server_URL/mrclean

where Server_URL is the fully qualified domain name or IP address of the server. If you use HTTPS, the server URL must match what appears on the server's SSL certificate. If you configure the private Insight server with an invalid URL, then the Symantec Endpoint Protection client continues to communicate with a previously valid Insight server.
  7. Click OK.

At the next heartbeat, clients start using the specified server for reputation queries.

Technical information

Symantec Insight for Private Clouds Endpoint Edition is typically installed in networks without Internet connectivity. The private server stores a copy of Symantec Insight's reputation database in your private cloud. Symantec Endpoint Protection reputation queries are HTTP or HTTPS requests to the private server rather than to Symantec's Insight server.

The private server downloads the Symantec Insight data over an encrypted, secure connection. You can manually update the Insight data or use third-party tools to check for updates and download the data automatically. Your update method depends on your network and the type of server on which you run Symantec Insight for Private Clouds.

When you use a private Insight server, Symantec does not receive any queries or submissions for file reputation.
