How To

Problem

Running out of Barcode licenses.

Environment

Barcode Solution 6.7.

Cause

In Barcode Solution version 6.6 and prior, Barcode Solution licenses were not consumed when using the Barcode receivng pages within the Altiris Console.

This has been changed in Barcode 6.7 and these pages now consume a Barcode Solution license.

Resolution

Licenses do not age and are tied to a system id or handheld device id, not an end-user.  This means if a user moves to multiple machines to enter barcode data, a license will be tied to each computer and will not release until an administrator goes into the NS console to remove it.

A license is consumed when any of the following is performed:

1.       The Barcode Search page is used and either the Submit button is clicked or the <Enter> key is pressed.

2.       The Barcode Quick Scan page is used and either the Submit button is clicked or the <Enter> key is pressed.

3.       The Receiving page is used and either the Submit button is clicked or the <Enter> key is pressed.

4.       The Assign Barcode page is used and either the Submit button is clicked or the <Enter> key is pressed.

5.       A handheld device uploads data to the Notification server through a network connection which can be wireless (WiFi or Bluetooth) or cradled.  Note:  Active Sync is not required for this function.

6.       A handheld device downloads data from the Notification server through a network connection which can be wireless (WiFi or Bluetooth) or cradled.  Note:  Active Sync is not required for this function.

A primary function of the Barcode Manager software on an endpoint system is to identify the system ID in order to track the consumption of a license if one of the four console pages, listed in the bullet above, are used to Submit data.
