Question:

What is the process for repairing Patch Management 7.0?

 

Answer:

It is highly recommended that running a repair should be done, while logged on to the Notification Server with the Application Identity credentials (full Altiris Admin credentials).

Also be sure to export ANY custom settings/policies, for the repair may set them back to default. They can then be imported following the repair. However, generally most settings are left in order. This is less common in later releases of the product.

If a remote session is needed, be sure to remote with the remote Admin switch: Start > Run > MSTSC /admin or /console.

There are two steps to the repair, the first repairs the files via an MSI repair. The second uses the default configuration files to restore missing stored procedures, views etc.


Step 1:


Go to Start > All Programs > Altiris > Symantec Installation Manager > Symantec Installation Manager.

This will open the Symantec Installation Manager. Scroll down in the list provided to the Altiris Patch Management Solution Section. Highlight the desired solution and the 'Patch Management Solution Core Services' then select 'Repair':

Note: The process may pause the Altiris Services for several minutes while repairs are conducted. As the repair processes finish, the 'Repair Complete' will be displayed. Select 'Finish' and move on to the next component until the all installed Patch Management Solution components have been repaired.


Step 2:


Run the appropriate config files for the solution repaired above.

Note: You may only run one of the following sets of commands.

For Example:

If you have Patch Management 7.0 without any Service Packs installed, then you will only run Steps for a Server with NO Service Pack installed:.

If you have PM 7.0 SP1, then you will only run the step: Steps for a Server with Service Pack 1:.

If you have PM 7.0 SP2, then you will only run step: Steps for a Server with Service Pack 2:.

Note: Running the following can cause some settings to revert back to default values, making note of any changes or having a database backup is recommended.

Open a command prompt and browse to <Install Dir>:\Program Files\Altiris\Notification Server\bin\ and run the desired config files.

 

Steps for a Server with NO Service Pack installed:

Patch Management Solution Core Services

• AexConfig /Configure "C:\Program Files\Altiris\Patch Management\Core\Config\PatchManagementCore.config"

• AexConfig /Configure "C:\Program Files\Altiris\Patch Management\ReportCorePatch\Config\PatchManagementCoreReportPack.config"

Patch Management Solution for Windows

• AexConfig /Configure "C:\Program Files\Altiris\Patch Management\Windows\Config\PatchManagement.config"

• AexConfig /Configure "C:\Program Files\Altiris\Patch Management\ReportWinPatch\Config\PatchManagementReportPack.config

 

Steps for a Server with Service Pack 1:

Patch Management Solution Core Services

• AexConfig /Configure "C:\Program Files\Altiris\Patch Management\Core\Config\PatchManagementCore.config"

• AexConfig /Configure "C:\Program Files\Altiris\Patch Management\ReportCorePatch\Config\PatchManagementCoreReportPack.config"
