What are the recommended system requirements for installing the Symantec Management Platform products in different environments?

Answer

This article describes the minimum system requirements for installing the Symantec Management Platform products and the recommended system requirements for installing the products in different environments. It also includes information about how to configure the Symantec Management Platform in different environments.

Minimum system requirements
Recommendations for a small environment (less than 500 managed endpoints)
Recommendations for a medium environment (500 to 3000 managed endpoints)
Recommendations for a large environment (3000 to 10000 managed endpoints)

As you plan your installation, develop a database growth strategy. As a rough guideline, allow ¾ to 1 MB of space in the Notification Server database for each managed endpoint. This guideline does not account for database fragmentation that can occur after the database is created. The number of installed products and how frequently policies and tasks run also impacts the size of the database.

This article uses on-box and off-box in reference to SQL Server. On-box means that SQL Server is installed on the same computer as Notification Server. Off-box means that SQL Server is installed on a different computer than Notification Server.

The information in this article was derived from large-scale testing in the Symantec Platform Performance Lab and from implementation on the Symantec production network.

Minimum system requirements

When you install the Symantec Management Platform products, Symantec Installation Manager performs a readiness check to determine if the computer meets the minimum system requirements.

Recommendations for a small environment (less than 500 managed endpoints)

In a small environment, you can host SQL Server on-box.

System requirement Recommendation
CPU 2 cores
CPU Speed 2.5 GHz
Memory 4 GB DDR2 RAM
Set the /3GB switch in Boot.ini
Set the SQL Maximum Server Memory to 1.2 GB RAM
Cache 3 MB L2
Network Gigabit
Hard disk 10,000 RPM SCSI or better
10 GB of free disk space
Operating System Windows 2003 Enterprise
SQL SQL Express 2005 or SQL Server 2005.
If several small scale environments are managed by a central server as part of a larger hierarchy, the central server should use SQL Server 2005.

In a small environment, you can install Symantec Management Platform on a VMware ESX Server. If you use a VMware ESX Server for the platform, we recommend that you install SQL Server off-box on a physical computer. If you choose to host SQL Server in a virtual environment, refer to Microsoft's Web site for supported virtualization configurations.

Recommendations for a medium environment (500 to 3000 managed endpoints)

In a medium environment, you can host SQL Server on-box or off-box. However, we recommend that you host SQL Server off-box.

You should also do the following with the Symantec Management Platform configuration:

  • Increase the interval that the Task Server checks for new tasks to 10 minutes.

    This setting is on the Task Agent Settings page in the Symantec Management Console. You can access this page at Settings > Notification Server > Task Settings.

  • Use a package server if you plan to deploy a very large number of packages or very large packages.

Make sure SQL does not become disk I/O bound or that the Altiris Service does not get memory starved by the SQL Service.

Recommendations for a large environment (3000 to 10000 managed endpoints)

In a large environment, you must host SQL Server off-box. We also recommend the use of a 64-bit SQL Server on a 64-bit operating system.

You should also do the following with the Symantec Management Platform configuration:

  • Increase the Altiris Agent configuration download request interval to 2 hours.

    This setting is on the Targeted Agent Settings page. You can access this page at Settings > Agents/Plug-ins > Altiris Agent > Settings.

  • Set up Task Servers and Package Servers off-box.

Due to the unique nature of large deployments; for environments over 25,000 nodes it is highly recommended to engage with the Symantec Services team to obtain specific architecture recommendations.
