Question
On the Microsoft Policy for Patch Management Solution there are two options for the Agent 'Send Package Events' and 'Send status events' what data does that send and what does it affect?

On three of the Inventory Policies there is an option called 'Send Inventory Summary' what does this data help with and how does it affect Notification Server?

Answer

'Send Package Events' and 'Send status events' are sent by default for most solutions, however because of the volume of data that will be sent for these with Patch Management. The ability to disable these events has been provided. The Microsoft Policy is located at Configuration> Solution Settings> Patch Management> Server Settings> Microsoft Settings> Microsoft.

There is currently only one Patch specific report in version 6.2 that utilizes these events.  The report 'Software Update Package Status - Summary' will not return results without this data.  The value of this report compared to the overhead created to retrieve the needed data is not worth it in most environments.  This may also affect non Patch reports that would use this data but again the option to disable these seperatly was created because of the performance affect that can occur.

'Send Inventory Summary' events return the following summary data:

  • How many rules where run for each dataclass
  • The time the event was processed
  • Count of rules that evaluated to True
  • Count of rules that evaluated to False
  • Number of errors if any
  • The time it took to run that inventory

This data is only used by on report 'Inventory Rule Summary by Computer'.  If this report is not being used the recommendation is to not send these events do to the Processing power that will be consumed by sending them.

The policies that use these reports are located at Configuration> Solution Settings> Patch Management> Windows> Global and Configuration> Solution Settings> Patch Management> Windows> Microsoft.
