Intermittent communication between AntiVirus server on NetWare 5.1 and the Symantec System Center or AntiVirus clients

You have a NetWare 5.1 server running IP only. Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition (NAVCE) or Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition (Symantec AV) clients do not report to the AntiVirus server correctly, and do not receive updates from the server. The Symantec System Center shows the server as intermittently up and down. Real Time Protection on the NetWare server is working correctly.


This can be caused by the TCP.NLM and/or TCPIP.NLM file being version 5.80u (non-domestic version), which is only 56-bit encryption capable. By replacing the two NLMs with 5.90s (Domestic 128-bit) versions, you correct the communication issue.

These version numbers are for NetWare 5.1 Support Pack 5. If you have an earlier Support Pack, try replacing the 5.80x version of these files with the 5.90x versions that correspond with your Support Pack level.

Another workaround is to install IPX to the server and to all the client and SSC computers that are having difficulty communicating. This will cause Symantec AV to use IPX if the IP communication fails. This may increase the traffic on your network.
