Issue

You upgraded from a previous version of Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition (NAVCE) to Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.0 (AV 8.0). When attempting to view the Virus History or other logs in the Symantec System Center, you see a Dr. Watson error, "MMC.EXE - Exception Access Violation."

Cause

Versions of Symantec System Center prior to 5.0 are not compatible with Symantec AntiVirus 8.0.

Solution

This error can occur if you are using Symantec System Center 4.0 that shipped with NAVCE version 7.6 and earlier, with AV 8.0.
To prevent this error, uninstall Symantec System Center 4.0 and its snap-ins from Add/Remove Programs. Restart the computer, and then install Symantec System Center 5.0. For detailed instructions in upgrading, please see one of the following documents:

How to upgrade to Symantec AntiVirus 8.x from versions of Norton AntiVirus prior to 7.5
How to upgrade Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition 7.5 or 7.6 to Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.0

If the error persists after upgrading to Symantec System Center 5.0, applying the latest Windows service pack may solve the problem. See the Microsoft article Access Violation in MMC When you Resize the Panes - Article ID: Q285900 for additional information.
