Problem

You need to know whether the Symantec System Center is supported on Terminal Services or Terminal Server.

Solution

Read the section for your version of Symantec System Center. To find your version, read Determining the version of Symantec System Center.

Support statement for Symantec System Center 10.1
With Symantec Client Security 3.1 and Symantec AntiVirus 10.1 and later, Symantec added support for Windows Terminal Services and Remote Desktop.

Application mode (Windows 2003/2000)
This section describes the supported scenarios and the unsupported scenarios when you use or install Symantec System Center 10.1 on Windows 2003/2000 in Application mode.

Supported:
  • Installation of Symantec System Center to Windows 2003 through a remote session.
  • Use of the Symantec System Center and the reporting console through a remote session.

Unsupported:
  • Installation of Reporting Server, Quarantine Server, or Quarantine Console through a remote session.
  • Installation of Symantec System Center to Windows 2000 through a remote session.
Terminal Services on Windows 2000 does not allow you to install programs in Application Mode. This is a limitation of Windows 2000 Server.

Note: When you install Symantec System Center in Application mode, a large number of active sessions may cause slow performance. If you experience performance problems when you view Symantec System Center, install Symantec System Center on a dedicated computer or to a computer with more available resources.

Remote Desktop mode or Remote Administration mode (Windows 2003/XP/2000)
This section describes the supported scenarios when you use or install Symantec System Center 10.1 on Windows 2003/XP in Remote Desktop mode or on Windows 2000 in Remote Administration mode.

Supported:
  • Installation of Symantec System Center through a remote session.
  • Use of the Symantec System Center and the reporting console through a remote session.

Unsupported:
Installation of Reporting Server, Quarantine Server, or Quarantine Console through a remote session.

Support statement for Symantec System Center 10.0
Before you install Symantec System Center on a Windows Terminal Server, the Terminal Server must be in Remote Administration mode. After you install Symantec System Center and restart the computer, you can put the Terminal Server in Application mode. You must perform the installation of Symantec System Center locally.

When Symantec System Center is installed on a Terminal Server, open Symantec System Center locally. Do not connect to Symantec System Center by using a terminal session, regardless of whether the server is in Application mode or Remote Administration mode.

Support statement for Symantec System Center 6.x and earlier
Symantec supports Symantec System Center 6.x and earlier on Terminal Services or Terminal Server only in a limited number of configurations. This is because of the unique environment and the potential consequences of running the Symantec System Center management tool on these environments. Communications, console management including AMS, and the Virus Definition Transport Method functionality are compromised under these conditions, whether through a remote session or locally. Of particular concern is that a terminal session does not have full rights to session 0, which can cause serious problems for the administrator.

Because of these conditions, Symantec System Center 6.x and earlier are not supported in conjunction with Terminal Services or the Terminal Server environment except when run locally on the server in two specific situations: Windows® XP or 2003 Server in Remote Desktop mode, and Windows® 2000 Server or Advanced Server in Remote Administration mode. No other configurations are supported. When Symantec System Center is installed on a Terminal Server, open Symantec System Center locally. Do not connect to Symantec System Center by using a terminal session. You must perform the installation of Symantec System Center locally.
