How to manually uninstall the Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.1 client from Windows XP 64-bit Edition 2003 or Windows Server 2003 64-bit Edition

When uninstalling Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition (Symantec AV), the preferred method is to run the built-in uninstaller program from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. However, due to an error or to some other reason, you need to uninstall Symantec AV 8.1 from Windows XP 64-bit Edition 2003 or Windows Server 2003 64-bit Edition manually.


This document describes how to manually remove Symantec AV 8.1 from the following three places:
  • The registry
  • The Start menu
  • The hard drive

Stop the following services before removing Symantec AV:
  • Symantec AntiVirus Client
  • Defwatch

Manually removing registry entries

CAUTION: We strongly recommend that you back up the registry before you make any changes to it. Incorrect changes to the registry can result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Modify only the keys that are specified. Read the document How to back up the Windows registry and How to use the Windows Registry editor before proceeding.

Note: You must have administrator permissions (read and write) to edit the registry.

To edit the registry:
  1. Navigate to the following key:

  2. Delete the LDVPMenu entry.
  3. Navigate to the following key:

  4. Delete the following entries:

    Norton AntiVirus Server
  5. If no other Symantec products are installed, then also delete the SymEvent entry.
  6. Navigate to the following key:

  7. Delete the following entries:
    Norton AntiVirus
  8. Navigate to the following key:

  9. Delete the VP6 entry.
  10. Navigate to the following key:

    Delete the following entries:

  11. Navigate to the following key:

  12. Delete the following entries:

    Norton Antivirus
    Norton Antivirus NT
  13. Navigate to the following key:

  14. Delete the Defwatch key.
  15. Delete the DEFWATCH_10 value.
  16. Delete the NAVCORP_70 value.
  17. Navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software \Symantec
  18. Delete the Norton Antivirus NT entry.
  19. If no other Symantec software is installed, delete the Symevent entry.
  20. Navigate to the following key:

  21. Delete the NAVNT entry.
  22. Click My Computer in the left pane. Click Edit > Find, and search for the following two strings:


    Delete every instance of the above strings that you find. They may be in key names or in values. These are the product install keys for the Symantec AV client.
  23. Delete the following key:

  24. Navigate to the following key:

  25. Delete the vptray entry.
  26. Restart the computer.

To remove Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition from the Start menu:
  1. Right-click the Start button, and then click Open All Users.
  2. Double-click Programs.
  3. Right-click the Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition folder, and then click Delete.
    To remove Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition client from the hard drive:
    1. Start Windows Explorer.
    2. Navigate to the C:\Program Files(x86)\Symantec_Client_Security folder.
    3. Right-click the Symantec AntiVirus folder, and then click Delete.
    4. If Symantec AV 8.0 is the only Symantec program on your computer, then delete the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec folder. Otherwise, open the Symantec folder, right-click the Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition folder, and click Delete.
    5. Navigate to the C:\Program Files(x86)\Common Files\Symantec Shared folder.
    6. Right-click the VirusDefs folder, and click Delete.
    7. Right-click the Licenses folder, and click Delete.
    8. If there is no other Symantec software installed, navigate to the C:\Program Files\Symantec folder. Delete all the files within it.
    9. Close Windows Explorer.
