The ltid daemon won't start on a NetBackup server because there are no tape drives defined in the devices database. (vmd doesn't start then and neither does tldd, tl8d, etc.)

Solution

There are two solutions to this problem.

1) Create a "dummy" tape drive entry in the devices database (/usr/openv/volmgr/database/ltidevs)
-A-  run tpconfig with the -noverify option  (/usr/openv/volmgr/bin/tpconfig -noverify)
          - choose Drive Configuration
          - choose Add
          - give the drive an obvious name (maybe FakeDrive)
          - choose any drive type
          - set the drive status to down (d)
          - don't configure the drive in a robot
          - don't choose multiple hosts
          - restart the Media Manager daemons (/usr/openv/volmgr/bin/stopltid;  /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/ltid -noverify)
-B-  edit the NetBackup startup script so that ltid will always run with the noverify option
           - vi /etc/rc2.d/S77netbackup (for Solaris servers)
           - have it call the noverify option when LTID is run.
                  if [test Y"$ltid" = Y]
                    then
                  $LTID -noverify
echo "Media Manager daemons started." > /dev/console
                     fi

2) Edit the startup script (/etc/rc2.d/S77netbackup in Solaris) so that vmd will start by itself.
    -A-  change this line "LTID=/usr/openv/volmgr/bin/ltid" to "LTID=/usr/openv/volmgr/bin/vmd"
-B-  make sure to restart the NetBackup daemons to test the new startup script (/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/goodies/support/bp.kill_all;  /etc/rc2.d/S77netbackup)-
