This document describes the main features of Symantec AntiVirus for Handhelds Corporate Edition (Symantec AVHCE).
Symantec AntiVirus for Handhelds Corporate Edition
- Protects handheld devices with real time and on-demand virus scanning
Auto-protect continuously scans for malicious code on the handheld. With Auto-Protect, suspicious files cannot be opened without permission from the user. When Auto-Protect identifies a suspicious file, the user has the option of deleting, repairing (Pocket PC only), not opening, or opening the file. Users can also perform on-demand scanning, automatic scans when new files are downloaded (post-synchronization scans), and scheduled scans.
- Automatically updates virus definitions
Symantec AVHCE uses virus definition files containing a threat list and threat details of known Palm OS or Pocket PC viruses. If configured, the desktop component of the product will automatically receive virus definition update files and update the protection on the handhelds with which it synchronizes. For handheld devices with Internet connectivity, LiveUpdate Wireless can update the device with the latest virus definitions and product updates over the Internet. For environments that use Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition, virus definitions can be transparently deployed to all clients that use the product from the Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition server.
- Monitors antivirus activity
The Activity Log provides users with key information about their protection and configuration. The Activity Log provides records of antivirus activities, including partial scans, full scans, found viruses, deleted infected files, and failures to delete infected files. During synchronization, comprehensive data reporting on virus activity, scan history, and other event history is transferred to the desktop and can be viewed through the History screen on the desktop.
- Protects multiple handhelds from the same desktop
Users who use more than one handheld can use Symantec AVHCE to protect and monitor them all from the same desktop.
- Protects both Palm and Pocket PC devices
Symantec AVHCE supports devices based on Palm OS 3.5 to 4.x, Palm OS 5.0, and Microsoft Pocket PC 2002 and 2003.
Symantec AntiVirus for Handhelds Corporate Edition with Event and Configuration Manager
In addition to the features of Symantec AVHCE, the version with Event and Configuration Manager plugs into the SESA framework to provide centralized management, configuration, and reporting of antivirus activity.
Note: SESA is purchased and installed separately. SESA must be installed and working properly before an administrator configures Symantec AVHCE to log events to SESA. For more information, read the SESA document Introduction to Symantec Enterprise Security Architecture 1.1.
Symantec AVHCE consists of two pieces: the desktop and the device piece. The desktop piece provides management, configuration, and installation functions, as well as managing the logs from the device. It integrates with the Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition (Symantec AV) interface if it is installed. The device piece, which is installed by synchronizing the handheld device with the desktop after the desktop piece is installed, provides the actual protection.
