Issue

When you use Symantec System Center to deploy clients, you see the error message "No Network Provider accepted the given network path." You can see the target clients in My Network Places.

Solution

Because this situation has a variety of causes, no one solution will work in every case. To solve the problem, try any solution and test to see if it fixed the problem. If it did not fix the problem, try another solution.

If the target clients run Windows 2003/XP with the firewall enabled, first follow the directions in the document Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 firewall prevents remote installation.

Incorrect DNS settings are the most common cause of this problem. Use the ping -a command to verify name resolution, and verify the accuracy of the DNS suffix.

This problem can happen when the default Windows shares do not exist on the target computer.

To confirm and set up shares

  1. On the target computer, at a command prompt, type the following command:

    net share

  2. If you do not see the ADMIN$ and <OS Drive>$ shares listed, create them.
Follow the directions for your version of Windows.
    • In Windows 2003/XP, at a command prompt, type the following commands:

      net share ADMIN$=C:\WINDOWS
      net share C$=C:\

    • In Windows 2000/NT, at a command prompt, type the following commands:

      net share ADMIN$=C:\WINNT
      net share C$=C:\

  3. If you do not plan to install Symantec AntiVirus on the OS drive, create a share for the drive on which you plan to install Symantec AntiVirus.
For example, if you plan to install Symantec AntiVirus on drive D, at a command prompt, type the following command:

    net share D$=D:\
