This document describes how to manually uninstall Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 9.x from Windows 98/Me.

 


Solution




Before you begin: This document does not include instructions for uninstalling Symantec Client Firewall 7.1. To remove Symantec AntiVirus and Symantec Client Firewall together, read the document Manually uninstalling Symantec Client Security 2.0 from Windows 98/Me.
 



Removing Symantec AntiVirus manually comprises the following three basic steps:

  • Removing Symantec AntiVirus from the registry
  • Removing Symantec AntiVirus from the Start menu
  • Removing Symantec AntiVirus from the hard disk


 


WARNING: We strongly recommend that you back up the system registry before making any changes. Incorrect changes to the registry could result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Modify only the keys specified. See the document How to back up the Windows registry before proceeding.




To remove Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition from the registry

  1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run.
  2. Type the following and click OK:

    regedit
     
  3. In the left pane of the registry editor, navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

     
  4. Delete the following values:
    • Ccapp
    • Vptray
       
  5. Navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices

  6. Delete the following values:
    • ccEvtMgr
    • ccSetMgr
    • Defwatch
    • Rtvscn95
       
  7. Close the registry editor, and restart the computer.
  8. Start the registry editor, and navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\Shellex\ContextMenuHandlers

     
  9. Right-click the LDVPMenu entry, and then click Delete.
  10. Navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec

     
  11. If Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition is the only Symantec product on the computer, delete the Symantec key. Otherwise, remove any keys that begin with Norton AntiVirus or Symantec AntiVirus.
  12. Navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD

  13. Delete the following keys:
    • SAVRT
    • SAVRTPEL
    • SYMEVNT
    • SYMTDI
       
  14. Navigate to any existing HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet\Services keys, and delete the same entries as in step 12.
  15. Navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\INTEL\DllUsage

     
  16. Delete the VP6 key.
  17. Navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\INTEL\LANDESK

  18. Delete the AMS2 key.
  19. In the left pane, click My Computer.
  20. On the Edit menu, click Find.
  21. Search for VirusProtect6 and delete all instances of this string.
  22. In the left pane, click My Computer.
  23. On the Edit menu, click Find.
  24. Search for 497CA84818B8A04418EA464733D75B72 and delete all instances of this string.
  25. Expand the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

    This key contains many keys.

     
  26. Click each key, and look in the right pane for references to Symantec AntiVirus.
    If you see any references to Symantec AntiVirus in the right pane, then delete the entire key.


Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition is now disabled, even though traces of it remain in the registry. These traces have little impact on how your computer operates. It is not necessary to remove them.

To remove Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition from the Start menu

  1. On the Windows taskbar, right-click the Start button, and then click Explore.
  2. Double-click Programs, and then double-click Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition.
  3. Right-click Symantec AntiVirus Client, and then click Delete.


To remove Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition from the hard disk

  1. Start Windows Explorer.
  2. Navigate to the Program Files folder.
  3. Delete the Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition folder.

    WARNING: Follow the next three steps only if Symantec AntiVirus is the only Symantec application installed. If the Symantec Shared folder is deleted while other Symantec programs are installed, they must be uninstalled and reinstalled in order for them to function.
  4. If Symantec AntiVirus is the only Symantec product on your computer, delete the \Program Files\Symantec folder.
  5. Navigate to the \Program Files\Common Files folder.
  6. If Symantec AntiVirus is the only Symantec product on your computer, delete the Symantec Shared folder.
  7. Navigate to the \WINDOWS\All Users\Application Data folder.
  8. Delete the Symantec folder.
  9. Exit Windows Explorer.
  10. Restart the computer.
