Problem
This document explains how to remove the optional AntiVirus Email Tools components of Symantec AntiVirus (SAV).
Environment
Please note: the client email tools should never be installed on a computer that is acting as a mail server (for instance, a Domino or Microsoft Exchange server)
Solution
Before you begin: If you have Symantec Client Security with Symantec Client Firewall, do not remove the AntiVirus Email Tools. Symantec Client Firewall depends on the drivers that are included in these tools.
You can remove the AntiVirus Email Tools by using Add or Remove Programs in Windows Control Panel.
To remove the Internet Email plug-in components using Add/Remove Programs
- On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
- Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
- In the list of installed programs, click Symantec Client Security.
- Click Change.
- Click Next.
- Click Modify.
- Click Next.
- Click the AntiVirus Email Tools icon, and then click This feature will not be available.

- Click Next.
- Click Install to apply the changes.
- Restart the computer.
After you restart the computer, the AntiVirus Email Tools are removed. Note that the system drivers that control the Email Tools are not unloaded from memory until the computer is restarted.
If you suspect that Add or Remove Programs did not remove the Internet Email Plug-in components completely, check for the following files and registry keys and remove them manually if necessary:
Warning: Do not remove these files and registry entries if Symantec home user software or Symantec Client Firewall is installed on this computer.
- Files
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\symndis.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\symtdi.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\symredrv.sys - Registry keys
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SYMNDIS
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SYMTDI
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SYMREDRV
