An installation of Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition fails. In the Windows Event Viewer - Application Log, you see the following entry:

Event ID 11708. Source: MSI Installer. Description: Product: Symantec AntiVirus -- Installation operation failed.

The most common cause of this problem is a corrupted or improperly removed previous version of Symantec AntiVirus or Norton AntiVirus. To fix the problem, uninstall Symantec AntiVirus. Before you install Symantec AntiVirus again, follow the manual uninstallation instructions for the latest version that you installed and for the previously installed version.
For help with this, read the document Manual uninstallation documents for Symantec Client Security products.

If a retail version of Norton AntiVirus (such as Norton AntiVirus 2004) was installed on the computer, follow the directions in the document How to solve problems when installing Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition over a retail or consumer version.

Incorrect rights and permissions can also cause this problem. If the problem persists, read the document Troubleshooting Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition installations: Checking rights and permissions.
