You have certain Web sites or computers that you want to either restrict from communicating with your computer or allow to bypass all the rules in Symantec Client Firewall 7.x.

Solution

Computers or Web sites in the Trusted Zone have full access to your computer. Computers or Web sites in the Restricted Zone cannot communicate with your computer.

You can specify addresses either by name or by IP address. If you know the name of a computer but do not know how to determine the IP address on a computer, see the document How to determine your computer's IP address.

To add addresses to the Trusted Zone
  1. Open Symantec Client Firewall.
  2. Click Client Firewall > Configure > Networking.
  3. Click the Trusted tab.
  4. Click Add. The Networking dialog box appears. Read the Networking dialog box section below for further instructions.

To add addresses to the Restricted Zone
  1. Open Symantec Client Firewall.
  2. Click Client Firewall > Configure > Networking.
  3. Click the Restricted tab.
  4. Click Add. The Networking dialog box appears. Read the Networking dialog box section below for further instructions.

There are three options for entering addresses:
  • Individually
  • Using a range
  • Using a network address

In most situations, you will enter addresses either individually or using a range. Look at the addresses that you are going to enter. If they can be sorted into an unbroken sequence of numbers, for example 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.6, then enter them as a range. If, however, the addresses are more random or are a sequence with gaps, then enter them individually.

How to enter addresses individually
  1. On the Networking dialog box, ensure that Individually is checked.
  2. Enter addresses one at a time, and separate them by a space.
  3. Click OK. Those addresses are added to the zone and identified as single addresses.

How to add addresses using a range
  1. Click Using a range.
  2. Enter the lowest address number as the Starting Internet address and the highest address number as the Ending Internet address.
  3. Click OK. The address range is added to the zone and identified as a range of addresses.

How to enter a network address
  1. Click Using a network address.
  2. In the Network address field, type the first address of the subnet.
  3. In the second field, type the subnet mask.
The subnet mask is a binary means of identifying how many digits of the address define the subnet. (This is a complicated subject that is beyond the scope of this document.) Unless you are dealing with a complex internal network and you understand subnet masking, you generally do not need to choose this option to add computers to the zone.
  4. Click OK. The network address is added to the zone and is identified by both IP address and mask.
