Quarantine displays slowly or fails to display

Issue



When you try to view the quarantine in Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition, the list of quarantined items takes a long time to appear or fails to appear. The main program interface may also take a long time to load.


Solution



This situation can occur when a large number of items are in the quarantine. The quarantine directory must be processed to generate the list of items for the quarantine interface. A very large number of items is in this directory can cause delays in the program; in extreme cases the program interface may stop responding. There is no specific number of items that will cause the problem because the issue is dependent on the computer's ability to process the information.

To fix the problem, move or delete the files that are in the Quarantine directory.


Default locations for the Quarantine folder


Note: If you upgraded to version 9.x from a previous version, you may still be using the path from the previous version.

Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 9.x
The following paths are the default locations:
  • Windows 2000/XP/2003
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5\Quarantine
  • Windows NT
    C:\WinNT\Profiles\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5\Quarantine
  • Windows 95/98
    C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine

Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 7.x/8.x
The following paths are the default locations:
  • Windows 2000/XP/2003
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5\Quarantine

To prevent the problem from recurring
To prevent this problem from happening again, set the quarantine purge options to a shorter period of time. Each environment is different, so it is not possible to have a specific recommendation for how often to purge quarantine.
