This document tells how to apply Symantec Client Security 3.0 and Symantec AntiVirus 10.0 Maintenance Release 2 Maintenance Patch 1.

Before you begin:
With the use of this patch, you can upgrade only those computers that run Symantec Client Security 3.0.2.x or Symantec AntiVirus 10.0.2.x.
You can use this patch on computers with Maintenance Release 2 Point Patch 1.
 



About applying the patch

The Symantec Client Security patch lets you upgrade your Symantec Client Security clients and servers while preserving their configuration settings. Because of the complexity and size of Symantec Client Security software, applying a patch provides a quicker, less costly, and more efficient method by which to upgrade your clients and servers.

You can use standard installation methods to apply the Symantec Client Security patch, including local, network, Active Directory, or third-party tools.

WARNING: You cannot uninstall the Symantec Client Security patch once it is installed on your clients and servers. If you need to remove the patch, you must first uninstall the Symantec Client Security client or server, then reinstall the previous Symantec software that does not contain the patch. To avoid this scenario, before you deploy the Symantec Client Security patch, you should install the patch in a test environment and ensure that the patch does not interfere with the normal operation of your computers and network.




Download and apply the Symantec Client Security patch
You can download the Symantec Client Security patch from a designated FTP Web site. You can apply the patch locally to an individual computer, or you can use Symantec System Center to deploy the patch to managed clients.

To download the Symantec Client Security patch for computers that run Windows
Do one of the following, depending on your program version:


To obtain the Symantec Client Security patch for computers that run NetWare
To obtain the Symantec Client Security patch for Novell NetWare, you must contact Technical Support.

To apply the Symantec Client Security patch locally to computers that run Windows

  1. Copy the .msp file that you downloaded to the computer to which you need to apply the patch.
  2. Double-click the .msp file to apply the patch.
  3. Restart the computer if you are asked to do so.


To apply the Symantec Client Security patch to computers that run NetWare

  1. Use a file-compression utility to uncompress the .zip file that you downloaded.
    Uncompress the file into a temporary folder.
  2. Open the CD1\NetWare Only\Rollout\AVServer folder, and then double-click the Setup.exe file.
  3. Click Update.
  4. Click the NetWare server that you need to update, and then click Add.
  5. Type the user name and password for the NetWare server's server group, and then click OK.
  6. Click Finish.


To deploy the Symantec Client Security patch to computers that run Windows by using the Client Remote tool

  1. From the Symantec Web site, download the Client Remote tool for your product:
  2. Save the .zip file to a local drive on the computer.
  3. Uncompress the .zip file to a temporary folder by using WinZip or a similar file-compression utility.
    A SAV folder or an SCS folder appears.
  4. Copy the .msp patch file to the SAV folder or to the SCS folder, depending on your product.
    If you skip this step, you may see the error message, "A VPRemote.dat file was not found."
  5. In the SAV folder or the SCS folder, double-click the Clientremote.exe file to start the Client Remote Tool.
  6. When you are prompted to select the Install Source Location, click Deploy Patch Path and then click Browse.
  7. Find the .msp file that you copied to the SAV folder or to the SCS folder, and then click Next.
  8. In the left pane, under Available computers, select the computers to which you want to deploy the patch.
  9. In the right pane, under Patch Targets, click the name of the patch that you want to deploy.
  10. Click Add.
    Type a user name and a password if you are asked to do so.
  11. Click Finish.
    Computers may restart automatically after the installation of the patch. To prevent a restart, edit the Vpremote.dat file in the SAV folder or in the SCS folder, depending on your product.
    You must restart the computer after patch deployment in order to enable Auto-Protect.


To edit the Vpremote.dat file

  1. Open the SAV folder or the SCS folder, depending on your product.
  2. Open the Vpremote.dat file in a plain-text editor, such as Notepad.
  3. Do one of the following, depending on your product:
    • For Symantec Client Security, change the command line to the following so that it appears on one line:

      msiexec.exe /p scs_3.0.2.2010_allwin_en.msp /qn REINSTALL=ALL REINSTALLMODE=omus REBOOT=ReallySuppress

       
    • For Symantec AntiVirus, change the command line to the following so that it appears on one line:

      msiexec.exe /p sav_10.0.2.2010_allwin_en.msp /qn REINSTALL=ALL REINSTALLMODE=omus REBOOT=ReallySuppress

       
  4. Save the file and close it.
