Solution

Before you begin:
With the use of this patch, you can upgrade only those computers that run Symantec Client Security 2.0.5 or Symantec AntiVirus 9.0.5.

The Client Remote tool runs on Windows 2003/XP/2000. The tool is not supported on Windows 98/NT.

About Symantec Client Security and Symantec AntiVirus patch files
Patches for Symantec Client Security and Symantec AntiVirus typically solve only a certain set of problems. When Symantec releases a patch to fix a particular problem, only computers that experience that problem should receive that patch. For a list of fixes that are included in this patch, read Release notes for Symantec Client Security 2.0.x and Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 9.0.x.

Download the patch
You can download the patch from the Symantec Web site.

To download the Symantec Client Security patch for Windows
Do one of the following, depending on your program version: If you are not sure if you use the licensed version, read How to determine whether Symantec Client Security 2.x or Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 9.x requires a license.

Apply the patch
You can apply the patch locally to an individual computer. You can also deploy the patch remotely to computers than run Windows 2003/XP/2000 by using the Client Remote tool.

WARNING: You cannot uninstall the patch once it is installed on your clients and servers. If you need to remove the patch, you must first uninstall the Symantec Client Security client or server, then reinstall the previous Symantec software that does not contain the patch. To avoid this scenario, before you deploy the patch, you should install the patch in a test environment and confirm that the patch does not interfere with the normal operation of your computers and network.

To apply the patch locally
  1. Uncompress the .zip file that you downloaded into a temporary folder by using WinZip or a similar file-compression utility.
  2. Copy the .msp file to the computer to which you need to apply the patch.
  3. Double-click the .msp file to apply the patch.
  4. Restart the computer if you are asked to do so.

Note: Symantec Client Security and Symantec AntiVirus patches require that you restart the computer. Symantec recommends that you allow for this restart because Symantec AntiVirus is disabled until the computer restarts.

To deploy a patch remotely by using the Client Remote tool
  1. Uncompress the .zip file that you downloaded into a temporary folder by using WinZip or a similar file-compression utility.
The Clientremote.zip file and the .msp patch file appear.
  2. Uncompress the Clientremote.zip file into a temporary folder by using WinZip or a similar file-compression utility.
The files appear in a folder named Client remote.
  3. Copy the .msp patch file to the Client remote folder.
If you skip this step, you may see the error message "A VPRemote.dat file was not found."
  4. In the Client remote folder. double-click the ClientRemote.exe file to start the Client Remote Tool, and then click Next.
  5. When you are asked to select the Install Source Location, click Patch file location, and then click Browse.
  6. Find the .msp file that you copied to the Client remote folder, and then click Next.
  7. In the left pane, under Available computers, select the computers to which you want to deploy the patch.
  8. In the right pane, under Patch Targets, click the name of the patch that you want to deploy.
  9. Click Add.
Type a user name and a password if you are asked to do so.
  10. Click Finish.
Computers may restart automatically after you install the patch. To prevent a restart, edit the Vpremote.dat file in the Client remote folder.
You must restart the computer after patch deployment in order to enable Auto-Protect.

Note: The Client Remote tool runs on Windows 2003/XP/2000. The tool is not supported on Windows 98/NT.

To edit the Vpremote.dat file in order to prevent automatic restart
