Do I need to upgrade Symantec AntiVirus to 10.1.7 before migrating to Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0?

Solution

Due to an issue with some SAV 10.1.6.6000 migration over previous versions, the installations of SAV Server copied files directly to the root of /Program Files.
The following article describes this problem in detail:
Installation files are installed to the root of the Program Files directory when migrating to Symantec AntiVirus 10.1.6.6000

Due to this issue, migrating to SEP 11 may fail if done on a machine experiencing this problem.

There are two ways to tell if this issue affects your Symantec AntiVirus Server:

  • The program files folder is now a shared folder.
  • Rtvscan.exe resides within C:\Program Files\

Note: The readme.txt file for "Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0" also warns of this issue, however it does not specifically refer to the scenarios mentioned above.

From the readme.txt:
------------------------------------------------------------------
Do Not Migrate Symantec AntiVirus Server version 10.1.6.xxxx (MR6)
------------------------------------------------------------------
Do not migrate Symantec AntiVirus Server version 10.1.6.xxxx (MR6) to Symantec Endpoint Protection client 11.0. The 11.0 migration routines use the uninstallation routines that exist in legacy products, and the uninistallation

routine for this version is corrupted and may delete non-Symantec directories and files in the \\Program Files directory.  To migrate Symantec AntiVirus Server version 10.1.6 to Symantec Endpoint Protection client 11.0, first migrate the server to Symantec AntiVirus server 10.1.7. You can then migrate the server to Symantec Client Protection client 11.0. This problem does not affect Symantec Client Security servers.

Please note that this information in the readme does not apply to all SAV Server 10.1.6.6000 installations.

Technical Information
The product will install into the Program Files directory. Standard removal of Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 client that was installed directly to the Program Files directory removes only Symantec files from the Program Files directory.
