Issue

LiveUpdate fails when run by Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM), with the following error in the LiveUpdate status.

Error

LiveUpdate encountered one or more errors. Return code = 4

Cause

This error indicates that LiveUpdate was unable to connect to the intended LiveUpdate server. This can be caused by one of the following:

  • Internet access is being blocked by a proxy server. See the Related Articles section for steps to configure Liveupdate for use with a proxy.
  • Another instance of LiveUpdate was running during the installation of SEPM. This prevents Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) 12.1 from updating the LiveUpdate product inventory settings with the new location for SEP 12.1 content.
  • SEPM is trying to connect to an internal LiveUpdate server and the URL supplied to LiveUpdate is not correct.
  • Enhanced Security is enabled in Internet Explorer.
  • A firewall that requires authentication to get to the Internet is used.
  • SEPM is no longer registered with LiveUpdate.
  • A Web filtering device is detecting and blocking certain items.

Solution

To re-register the SEPM with LiveUpdate, follow these steps:

Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1

  1. Open a command window, then browse to:

    C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\bin
  2. Type lucatalog -cleanup and press Enter.
  3. Type lucatalog -forcedupdate and press Enter.
  4. Run LiveUpdate to verify that there are no errors.

Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.x

  1. Open a command window, then browse to:

    C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\bin
  2. Type lucatalog -update and press Enter.
  3. Run LiveUpdate to verify that there are no errors.

If the error persists, more detailed information about why LiveUpdate failed can be found in the Log.Liveupdate log file. This log file can be found in one of the following locations:

  • <Drive>:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveUpdate\Log.LiveUpdate
  • <Drive>:\ProgramData\Symantec\LiveUpdate\Log.LiveUpdate
