How do I resolve this error "Symantec CMC Smc has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for inconvenience."

Solution

Disable/Uninstall all third party firewall applications (also antivirus) including Windows firewall.
  1. Uninstall the currently installed version of SEP 11 through the Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Restart the computer.
  3. Verify that SEP is completely removed by reviewing the following document:
Title: How to manually uninstall Symantec Endpoint Protection client from Windows 2000, XP and 2003, 32-bit Editions
    Document URL:http://service1.symantec.com/support/ent-security.nsf/docid/2007073018014248
  4. Install the currently available version of SEP 11.
  5. Ensure anyother remaining firewall or antivirus applications are still disabled.
