Symantec Endpoint Protection Client Installation fails at "Writing system registry values"

Technical Solution


SEP Client installation fails as "Writing system registry values" and rolls back. An error dialog window appears with the following:

Error 1402. Could not open key:
Verify that you have sufficient acces to that key, or contact your support personnel.

The customer was having issues with SEP not functioning properly and attempted to uninstall SEP.

- The uninstall failed.
- The customer ran CleanWipe successfully.
- Re-install failed with the above error.


The user does not have the proper permissions for the system registry keys. The customer may have applied a security template that removed the proper permissions.


Make sure that the user is logged in as the administrator and make sure the administrator account also has the correct permissions (Full Control works).
Also check that the permissions are not being inherrited from a higher level.
