Issue

When running LiveUpdate for SAVM (Symantec AntiVirus for Macintosh), the menubar may not change to display LiveUpdate menus and there will be no dock icon for LiveUpdate.

Symptoms
LiveUpdate does not display appropriate menus or dock icon.

User will only be able to quit LiveUpdate by...

  • updating content and clicking "Quit" button,
  • closing the LU window by clicking the close widget,
  • or killing process in Activity Monitor or via "kill" command line.
You can otherwise use LiveUpdate normally.

Cause

An application alias was not properly created for LiveUpdate in the Norton Solutions Support folder

Solution

Use the MakeAliasFile command within the Contents/Resources folder inside the installer package for Symantec AntiVirus (on the SAVM disk image).

From a command prompt, navigate to the Symantec AntiVirus Installer.mpkg/Content/Resources directory and run the following command:

sudo ./MakeAliasFile -f "/Applications/Symantec Solutions/LiveUpdate.app" "/Library/Application Support/Norton Solutions Support/Norton Application Aliases/LiveUpdate"

This will create an alias to LiveUpdate in the Norton Application Aliases folder. Once this is done, LiveUpdate will invoke as expected from the Symantec QuickMenu and can be exited normally.
