Problem
You are planning to reinstall the current version of pcAnywhere or upgrade to a later version, and you need to keep the current configurations--hosts, remotes, callers, and so forth.
Environment
Please note that as of pcAnywhere 12.5 build 1086 the files noted below are locked to the system they are installed to and will need to be unlocked on the machine they are being used on before being copied off for back up or for mass distribution. Please see How to decrypt a host or caller file to send to support, use with Symantec Packager or use on additional machines
Solution
Data backup
The pcAnywhere data, including connection items and caller information files, are stored in either a \Data folder or within the \pcAnywhere folder itself, depending on the version of pcAnywhere you are running. Once you have reinstalled or upgraded, copy the backed-up contents into the new data location for pcAnywhere.
The location of the pcAnywhere data, depends on the version of pcAnywhere installed and, in some cases, the operating system to which it is installed. The following are the default locations for the pcAnywhere data by version and platform:
| pcAnywhere versions | Platforms | Default data location |
| pcANYWHERE32 versions 7.x and 8.x | all platforms | C:\Program Files\pcANYWHERE\Data |
| pcAnywhere 9.0 | all platforms | C:\Program Files\Symantec\pcAnywhere\Data |
| pcAnywhere 9.2 | Windows 9x: | C:\Windows\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\pcAnywhere |
| pcAnywhere 9.2 | Windows NT 4.0 | C:\WinNT\profiles\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\pcAnywhere |
| pcAnywhere 9.2 | Windows 2000 | C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\pcAnywhere |
| pcAnywhere 10.x or 11.0 | Windows 9x | C:\Windows\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\pcAnywhere |
| pcAnywhere 10.x or 11.0 | Windows NT 4.0 | C:\WinNT\profiles\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\pcAnywhere |
| pcAnywhere 10.x or 11.0 | Windows 2000/XP | C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\pcAnywhere |
| pcAnywhere 12.0.1 | Windows 9x/Me | C:\WINDOWS\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\pcAnywhere |
| pcAnywhere 12.0.1 | Windows NT | C:\WINNT\Profiles\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\pcAnywhere |
| pcAnywhere 12.x | Windows 2000/2003/XP | C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\pcAnywhere |
| pcAnywhere 12.x | Windows Vista/2008 | C:\ProgramData\Symantec\pcAnywhere |
| pcAnywhere 12.5 build 463 (sp2) | Windows 7 | C:\ProgramData\Symantec\pcAnywhere |
| Note: If necessary, replace C with the drive in which the operating system is installed. | ||
Note: If you upgraded to pcAnywhere 9.2 by downloading and installing the 92up.exe file, then the path to the pcAnywhere data folder will conform to the path for pcAnywhere 9.0 - C:\Program Files\Symantec\pcAnywhere.
TCP/IP list backup
The TCP/IP list is stored in the registry. For the steps to back up the TCP/IP list, please refer to the appropriate document:
