Issue

At the end of the Symantec Ghost 7.x or 8.x installation you see the message "08001 [Sybase][ODBC][Adaptive Server Anywhere] Unable to connect to database server: Unable to start database server," and you cannot log on to the Ghost Console. When you check the \Program Files\Symantec\Ghost folder, you find that it does not contain a Bin folder, a DB folder, or the Symantecghost.db file.

Solution

This is a failed installation and sometimes happens when you upgrade Ghost and chose a new installation folder instead of installing into the old Ghost folder. To resolve the problem, modify the ODBC System DSN option, uninstall Ghost, and then install Ghost.

Before you begin: If you have successfully installed Symantec Ghost 7.x or 8.x and then added computer names, the location of image files, and so on to the Ghost Console, you might want to keep that configuration information instead of recreating it. To save it, copy the SymantecGhost.db (if present) to a safe location before proceeding. If you cannot find the file, then you do not have any saved configuration information in the Symantec Ghost Console.

To modify the ODBC System DSN option

  1. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Data Sources (ODBC).
  2. Click the System DSN tab.
  3. Click Symantec Ghost, and then click Configure.
  4. Click the Network tab.
  5. Uncheck TCP/IP and check Shared memory.
  6. Close the ODBC Data Sources dialog box.
  7. Restart the Ghost Console computer.
  8. Log in as an Administrator or Domain Administrator.
  9. Uninstall and then install Symantec Ghost.

If the problem persists, continue with the following steps in the order provided.

To uninstall Ghost

  1. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  3. Click Symantec Ghost.
  4. Click Add/Remove and then follow the on-screen instructions.
  5. Delete the following folders from the \Program Files folder:
    • \Symantec\Ghost
    • Norton Ghost (If the folder exists)

To disable Adaptive Server Anywhere

  1. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Data Sources (ODBC).
  2. Click the System DSN tab.
  3. Click Symantec Ghost . The driver displayed for Ghost should be Adaptive Server Anywhere 7.0.
If Ghost is not listed, see the "Alternate solution" section.
  4. Click Remove and follow the prompts.
  5. Restart the computer.
  6. Log in as an Administrator or Domain Administrator.
  7. Install Symantec Ghost 7.x or 8.x.
  8. If you saved symantecghost.db, copy the file to the \Program Files\Symantec\Ghost\db folder.

Alternate solution
If you cannot disable Adaptive Server Anywhere in the ODBC Data Sources, removing specific registry keys will resolve the problem.

WARNING: We strongly recommend that you back up the system registry before making any changes. Incorrect changes to the registry could result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Please make sure you modify only the keys specified. Please see the document How to back up the Windows 95/98/NT registry before proceeding.

To save it, copy the SymantecGhost.db (if present) to a safe location before proceeding. If you cannot find the file, then you do not have any saved configuration information in the Symantec Ghost Console.

To remove specific registry keys

  1. Click Start > Run.
  2. Type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Navigate to and delete any key related to Adaptive Server Anywhere that is under the following subkeys:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/ODBC/ODBCINST.INI
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/ODBC/SYBASE

  4. Delete the Value for any Adaptive Server Anywhere key that is under the following subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/ODBC/ODBCINST.INI/ODBC Drivers
  5. Delete the following key:

    KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/ODBC/SYMANTEC GHOST
  6. Click Registry > Exit to save the changes and close the Registry Editor.
  7. Restart the computer.
  8. If you see a message instructing you to update the Windows ODBC drivers, install the latest ODBC (MDAC) drivers. For information, see ODBC errors while installing Ghost Server, running Ghost Enterprise Console, or running an ODBC application.
  9. Log in as an Administrator or Domain Administrator.
  10. Install Symantec Ghost 7.x or 8.x. Installing Ghost also installs Adaptive Server Anywhere.
  11. If you saved symantecghost.db, copy the file to the \Program Files\Symantec\Ghost\db folder.
