This document describes how to license your copy of Symantec Ghost 7.0, Symantec Ghost 7.5, or Symantec Ghost 8.x

Licensing in Symantec Ghost 7.0, 7.5, and 8.x works differently than in previous versions. Successfully licensing Symantec Ghost 7.0, 7.5, or 8.x requires a serial number, registration file, and validation key.
  • The serial number: This is a unique 10-digit number included in a certificate that Symantec mails to you. The mailed certificate may take 3 to 5 business days to reach its destination. Note that Symantec does not print the serial number on the Ghost box. The serial number is available only from the certificate or by contacting Symantec. The certificate is similar to the following example:

    Issued to:
    ABC Corp
    John Smith
    123 Main Street
    Anytown, OR 97401
      Issue Date 6/1/01 Sales Order# 12312312 Certificate# 12121

SN07-90-01376 SYM GHOST CORP ED 7.0 CV 1000 users
Serial Number required For Activation: 1234567890

      To activate this certificate, visit
Note that you cannot activate the certificate at That Web site provides information on how to register Ghost, as does this document.
  • The Ghost registration file: GhostReg.dat, is an encrypted file that Ghost creates during or after installation. This file is not available until you apply a valid serial number during the Ghost installation or to Ghost Console.
  • The validation key: This is sent to you by email from a Symantec server after you send the registration file. The validation key is a string of twenty alpha-numeric characters, such as 0244E090AEEBBA9F1FBB.

Note: This Ghost version does not prompt you for the number of licenses that you purchased. Ghost obtains that information automatically from a Symantec registration server.

To register Ghost
  1. Install the server component of Ghost. This is also known as Ghost Console.
    • During installation, fill in the information at the User Information window, including a valid email address and the serial number. Serial numbers are 10 digits long.
    • If you do not yet have the serial number, leave the Serial Number box blank and complete the Ghost installation. You cannot complete registration until you receive the serial number. After you receive the serial number, continue with Step 2.
  2. If you did not enter the serial number during installation, do so now:
    1. Open Ghost Console
    2. Click Help, and then click Generate Registration File.
    3. Type a valid email address in the Email address box. This address will be used to send a validation key to you.
    4. Type the serial number in the Serial Number box.
    5. Click OK. Ghost creates a registration file.
  3. Send the registration file to Symantec.
    1. Locate the file GhostReg.dat
Note that this file is not available until you have applied a valid serial number to the Ghost installation, as in Step 1 or 2.
    2. Send GhostReg.dat through email to Symantec will then send a validation key to the email address you entered during installation. If you applied the serial number after installation, Symantec sends the validation key to the email address you entered when you applied the serial number.
    3. When you receive the validation key from Symantec, copy it to a floppy disk or to a hard disk on the Ghost server computer.
  4. Apply the validation key to the Ghost installation:
    1. Open Ghost Console.
    2. Click Help, and then click Register Console.
    3. Type or paste the validation key into the Validation Key box.
    4. Click OK. This step completes your Ghost registration.

  • If you later uninstall and reinstall Ghost, you will need to reinstall using the same User ID, then re-enter the serial number and validation key. Keep these in a safe place. If you install using a different User ID, you will need to obtain a new validation key.
  • Before uninstalling Symantec Ghost, read the document Saving Symantec Ghost configuration information.
