Issue

During Ghost installation, when you see the window that requests information for registering your Ghost purchase, you see the message "Unable to open registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\symantec\installed apps." After you click OK, you see the message "Unable to open registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\symantec\symantec ghost."

Solution

This problem is due to the permissions settings in the Windows registry.

WARNING: We strongly recommend that you back up the registry before making any changes to it. Incorrect changes to the registry can result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Modify only the keys that are specified. See the document How to back up the Windows registry for instructions.

To change settings in the registry
  1. Check that the following keys exist in the Windows registry, and that the permissions for these keys are set to Full Control:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\symantec\installed apps
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\symantec\symantec ghost

    • If the keys exist and are set to Full Control, change the permissions for the following key to Full Control:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\symantec
    • If the two keys do not exist, create them and set the permissions to Full Control.
    • If the permissions for the two keys are not Full Control, change the permissions to Full Control.
  2. Log on to the computer with the Administrator user account, to which you have added the Domain Administrator security group.
  3. Install Ghost.

If you see the same messages again:
  1. Log on to the computer with the Administrator user account, to which you have added the Domain Administrator security group.
  2. Remove the following key from the Windows registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\symantec
  3. Install Ghost.
