Issue

You have Symantec Ghost 7.5, and you want to know how to install the Ghost Client on Ghost client computers.

Solution

The appropriate method to use for installing the Ghost 7.5 Client depends on which Windows operating system the client computers are running and whether those computers have a previous version of the Ghost Client installed.

This document provides information for the following subjects:
  • Upgrade - How to upgrade an installation of the Symantec Ghost 7.0 or 6.x Client to the Symantec Ghost 7.5 Client.
  • Installation - How to install the Ghost Client on a computer that previously did not have the Client installed. Often, this process does not require visiting the client computer.
  • Rolling out the Client - Why it is easier to install the Ghost Client before the first rollout of an image file.

Upgrading the existing Ghost Client to version 7.5
If a prior version of Ghost Console is installed, you can install Ghost 7.5 over the prior version. You do not need to uninstall the prior Ghost version.

The first time you use the Ghost 7.5 Console to run a Task that has the Clone option checked and includes the client computer, Ghost automatically upgrades the previous Ghost Client to the 7.5 Ghost Client.

Note that you do not need to execute a Task immediately. Ghost functions fine with a mix of updated and non-updated client computers.

How to verify that the client has been updated:
  1. Open Ghost Console.
  2. Right-click the client computer and click Properties.
  3. Click the Client tab. This tab displays the version of the Ghost Client that is installed on the client computer.

If the version number matches the Ghost 7.5 version number, the client computer has been updated. For a list of version numbers, see the document How to determine your version of Ghost.

Installing the 7.5 Ghost Client
Ghost 7.5 provides three methods for installing the Ghost Client on computers that do not have a Ghost Client installed:

Remote Client Install - Use this procedure when the client computer is in a domain and is running Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP Professional, or the client computer is in a workgroup and is running Windows NT or Windows 2000. The other procedures will also work.

Install from the Ghost CD - Use this procedure when client computer is in a workgroup and running Windows XP, or the client computer is running Windows 95/98/Me. This procedure requires visiting each client computer.

Install by means of a network log-in script - Use this procedure when client computer is running Windows 95/98/Me. This procedure does not require visiting each client computer, but it does require writing a script that will be included in the network log-in script. Symantec does not provide technical support for this procedure. Consult your Symantec Ghost Implementation Guide for further information.

Remote Client Install
The Remote Client Install method does not require that you visit each client computer. The installation can be done entirely from the Ghost Console. This method is available for only the following types of client computers:
  • A computer that is booted into Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP Professional, and is a member of a domain.
  • A computer that is booted into Windows NT or Windows 2000, and is a member of a workgroup.

The method will not work for client computers that are running Windows 95/98/Me, Windows XP Home Edition, or computers that are running Windows XP and are a member of a workgroup.

To remotely install the Ghost Client:
  1. Locate the computer to which you will install the Ghost Client:
    1. Open Ghost Console. Ghost displays the "First time run" window, which includes buttons for viewing the ReadMe.txt file and for managing the Ghost accounts on domains.
      • Closing the "First time run" window does not prevent you from viewing the ReadMe.txt file, or managing the Ghost accounts on domains.
      • The ReadMe.txt file is also available as an option on the Ghost installation CD.
      • The feature for managing Ghost accounts on domains is available from the option "Supported Domains list..." on the Tools menu option in the Ghost Console.
    2. Click Close. Ghost displays the "Symantec Ghost Console Wizard" window.
    3. Click Cancel to close this window.
    4. Click Tools, and then click "Remote Client Install..." You see the Remote Client Install window, which displays the computers on the network.
    5. Navigate to the computer to which you want to install the Ghost Client.
  2. Install the Ghost Client:
    1. Click the computer name.
    2. Click Install. Ghost now performs the client installation.

Install from the Ghost CD
This method requires that you visit each client computer where you want to install the Client. Use this method when you cannot use the Remote Client Install procedure, and you do not yet want to roll out a cloning Task to the client computer. That is, you do not yet want to replace the contents of the disk with a new image.

To perform a client installation from the Ghost installation CD:
  1. Start the computer into Windows.
  2. Insert the Ghost installation CD.
  3. Wait for the Installation menu to appear.
  4. Select Install Symantec Ghost 7.5 Corporate Edition.
  5. Follow the prompts. When you see a choice for installation type, choose Console Client rather than another option such as Standard Tools.
  6. When prompted for the Ghost Console computer name, type in the machine name for the Ghost server computer.

Note: If you proceed without entering in a machine name, the installation will proceed normally, however, a problem might occur when you have more than one Ghost server computer on the same network. The client computer might be "matched" to the wrong Ghost server computer. If this happens, the Ghost server computer cannot roll out an image to that client computer. You will see the message "polling for bound server" and the Ghost client computer will not connect to the Ghost console computer. For more information on this issue, read the document Error: "You did not specify the machine name..." during installation. To resolve this, the Pubkey.crt file needs to be replaced. To replace the file, read the document How to Replace the PUBKEY.CRT File.
  7. Continue with the installation procedure.

Rolling out the Ghost Client in the first image rollout
When Ghost cannot install the Client remotely, you can install the Client from the Ghost CD or install the Client when you first rollout a Ghost image to the client computers. Installing from the Ghost CD is easier and more efficient.

In previous Ghost versions, a standard method for installing the Ghost Client on the client computers was to include the Ghost Client in the image file and to use Ghost Multicast Server to rollout the image. Ghost Console could not be used to rollout the initial image because the Console required the client computers to have a Ghost boot partition. Using Ghost Multicast Server required booting each client computer from a Ghost bootable floppy disk to connect to a Multicast Session.

In Symantec Ghost 7.5, it is easier to perform the first rollout with Ghost Console rather than Ghost Multicast Server. Because Ghost 7.5 Console does not require a Ghost Boot Partition on the client computers, using Ghost Console avoids the need to visit each client computer to start it from a Ghost bootable floppy disk.
