LiveUpdate does not install the Symantec Network Security patch updates

Issue



When you schedule Symantec Network Security 4.0 or Symantec Network Security 7100 Series to run LiveUpdate, it downloads and installs the security updates and engine updates. It also downloads the patch updates but does not install them.

In this situation, the version number that is listed in the Network Security console on the Devices tab for the "default node name" and "available versions" shows a more recent Symantec Network Security version than the actual installed version.


Solution



This situation happens when you schedule LiveUpdate to run automatically. This is working as designed. The patch updates require a reboot and are installed only when you run LiveUpdate manually.



Technical Information
To run LiveUpdate automatically, use the Auto Install Options in the Schedule LiveUpdate tab in the Network Security console. LiveUpdate downloads the security updates, engine updates, and patch updates, and installs the security updates and engine updates. It does not install the patch updates.
