Technical Solution

CAPICOM.dll has been unregistered from SMC Server which is the root cause for this issue.

After Microsoft Windows update completes and the server restarts, the SMC Server service does not start.

Microsoft CAPICOM component (A COM component providing Cryptographic services to applications) was found in unregistered state. The Server boot strap process tries to look up and access this component at the time of service start. Since CAPICOM.DLL was not registered on the SMC Server computer, the service cannot start.

Register the CAPICOM component using the command line:

RegSvr32 "C:\Program Files\Microsoft CAPICOM\Lib\X86\CAPICOM.dll"

Legacy ID
