Scheduled Reporting Database Synchronization Job generates an error with the details 'Unable to start execution of step 1' in Failures tab

Symptoms
Error(s) generated in the 'Scheduled Reporting Database Synchronization Job' job run's Failures tab are as follows:


Error: Error synchronizing standards evaluation results to the reporting database. (NOTE: There could also be errors synchronizing; change auditing information, entitlements details, policy module details, etc...)

Error details: Unable to start execution of step 1 (reason: Error authenticating proxy %Domain%\%User%, system error: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.). The step failed.


Cause



This problem occurs when one of the following conditions is true:

1. The user account that is used to run the package under SQL Server Agent differs from the original package author. 2. The user account does not have the required permissions to make connections or to access resources outside the SSIS package.

The production database uses the SSIS platform for reporting purposes. The information that is provided in the Secure Configuration - SSIS Server Connection panel is used to connect to the msdb database and to deploy the SSIS packages. The SQL Agent must be enabled and active on the selected database.

You should set up the Microsoft SQL Agent Service as a local system account. If you use a domain account, then the account must be assigned to the sysadmin role for the Microsoft SQL Server. In addition, you must add the account to the group SQLServer2005SQLAgentUserComputer_NameInstance_Name.

Solution



Set the service startup account for SQL Server Agent to an account that has the required permissions to make connections and access resources outside the SSIS package:
  1. On the Start menu, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (or 2008), point to Configuration Tools, and then click SQL Server Configuration Manager.
  2. In SQL Server Configuration Manager, click SQL Server Services.
  3. In the details pane, right-click the name of the SQL Server Agent instance for which you want to change the service startup account, and click Properties.
  4. In the SQL Server Agent <instancename> Properties dialog box, click the Log On tab, and select one of the following Log on as account types:
      • Select a Windows Built-in account if your jobs require resources from the local server only.
      • Select This account if your jobs require resources across the network, including application resources; if you want to forward events to other Windows application logs; or if you want to notify operators through e-mail or pagers.
  5. If you selected This account, enter the Microsoft Windows account name that SQL Server Agent will use in the Account Name box, enter the password for this account in the Password box, and then re-enter it in the Confirm password box. Click Browse to search for a user or group.

    You must restart SQL Server Agent before these configuration changes take effect.
