Issue

Why am I not able to stream or activate a virtualized package after December 29th, 2009?

Solution

Who Does this Message Apply To?

The instructions below only apply if you have used Symantec Workspace Streaming 6.1 Common Installer to install the Workspace Virtualization agent, in which case please read this entire message and the instructions carefully. This does not apply to you if you have used any other mechanism to install the Workspace Virtualization agent.

What has Occurred?

In order to better meet the needs of our Symantec Workspace customers, Symantec has been working towards eliminating the requirement for these customers to enter their license key to activate their product. Unfortunately, an aspect of the current Common Installer results in certain functionality becoming inadvertently disabled beginning on December 29th, 2009. This can impact the availability of virtualized applications.

Your Requested Action:

We have determined the reason for this issue and are taking corrective actions. In the meantime, in order to avoid potential problems with your virtualized applications, please follow the instructions provided below to use your previously-provided, customer-specific license key(s). However, if you do not yet have your license key(s) please obtain and deploy them as soon as possible – your keys are available via the License Management Portal at: http://lindon.extranet.altiris.com/lmp_v2/customerinterface.aspx

If you have any problems obtaining your license key(s) or applying the instructions below, please contact Symantec Workspace Support via the web at http://mysupport.symantec.com or by calling Symantec Technical Support in your region:

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/contact_techsupp_static.jsp

Future versions of the software will eliminate the need for the additional steps below.

Again, the instructions below are ONLY necessary if you have installed your product using the Symantec Workspace Streaming 6.1 Common Installer. If you have installed your product using any other mechanism, or if after December 29th you have not noticed decreased functionality, the steps below are NOT necessary.

Instructions

To resolve this issue, a valid SWV product key must be registered. The user that is registering the key must have sufficient rights to modify the values referenced below in Methods 2 and 3. Typically this means that the user should be an administrator.

Method #1: Use this method when the endpoints are being managed by the Workspace Streaming server.

  1. Download streaming package “SetSVSKey.ZIP” from support ftp below .
  2. Upload the ZIP file to the 6.1 SP1 streaming server
  3. Enable Pre-population of Package (PPP) option for this package

Note: This package will be automatically deployed to all users without needing an explicit provision for each user or group and update the SWV product key.

Method #2: Download and execute setswvkey.exe from support ftp below with the proper license key shipped with the product as an argument. For example, “setswvkey.exe {PRODUCTKEY.EN_US}.

Method #3: The product key is stored as a REG_SZ value named "ProductKey". Product keys are of the form, XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX, where each X is a lower case letter or number. This value is stored under a registry key that varies based on the version of virtualization you are using.

Directly access the registry and set the value. This can be done using regedit or any tool that can set registry values or by using the supplied .reg files.

  • On versions of SWV/SVS prior to 6.1.5104 (a.k.a. SWV 6.1 SP1) the parent registry key is "HKLM\SYSTEM\Altiris\SVS". A sample reg file “6.1.4113 and below.reg” can be downloaded from to import directly.
  • For SWV versions 6.1.5104 and later the parent registry key is "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\FSLX\Parameters\SVS". A sample reg file “6.1.5104 and above.reg” can be downloaded from ftp to import directly.

Once the key is set, the product will immediately have full functionality enabled. No reboot is required.

To verify that the new product key has been registered correctly and that it is a valid key, you can run “SVSCMD CHECKKEY” as an administrator. If everything is correct, you will see a message “Key is valid”.
