When browsing for VMware restores in NetBackup 7.0 there is no vmx file

Solution

When using NetBackup for VMware and browsing for backup images using the "Select from virtual machine backup" option the files displayed will vary depending on the backup method.

If backups are captured using the vStorage API the only files displayed will be vmdk files.

If backups are captured using the VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB) Framework the files displayed will incude *.vmx, *.vmdk, *.log, etc.

When upgrading from NetBackup 6.5 to NetBackup 7.0, even if VCB is still installed on the VMware Backup Host (formerly called the VMware proxy server), NetBackup will automatically use the vStorage API if the following conditions are met:  the VMware ESX server is at least 3.5, or the Virtual Center Server is at least 2.5

The virtual machine attributes are still gathered by NetBackup and stored with the backup image, but not as a vmx file.   For automated restores VMware Converter is no longer used, so the vmx file is not required.  Backups captured using the vStorage API will be restored using the vStorage API.
