VMWare Agent backup of a VM may fail with error 0xe000959b when VMWare is unable to Snapshot a large drive.


Error



0xe000959b - An attempt to take a snapshot of a virtual machine failed because it was unable to quiesce a file system.


Solution



This error may occur when backing a Virtual machine that has been configured with large hard drive(s).

The vSphere client will show the following error:
File <unspecified filename> is larger than the maximum size supported by datastore <unspecified datastore>

Workaround:
Backup the virtual machine via a remote agent.
