When performing a Windows system volume backup, NetBackup filters all files that are backed up by Shadow Copy Components. This is described in detail in TECH76997 (Legacy Technote 337444).
Sometimes it may be desirable to back up all files on a system volume regardless of whether they are parts of Shadow Copy Components or not, to be able to restore these files individually.

Solution

Edit the backup policy and enter the following line in the backup selection:

\\hostname\c$

(where 'hostname' is the hostname of your client, which should match the client name entry in the backup policy)

This will back up all files on a system volume, except for the files that are open.

However, be aware that you need to back up Shadow Copy Components to be able to perform a full system restore.

Windows 2008 client may fail with  Error 13 during Backup jobs when selction made in the format described above  because of changes made to Windows 2008 and Windows 2008R2 specific to SMB 2.0 that  can cause a timing error in the file read operation performed by the API which NetBackup uses to read files (NTIO) which results in a NULL_POINTER_WRITE which causes bpbkar32.exe to fault.

To overcome the same Create the following registry key and run the backups again
1. Browse to KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\VERITAS\NetBackup\CurrentVersion\Config
2. In the Config registry key, create a new key called NTIO
3. In the NTIO registry key, create a REG_DWORD value, give it the name UseNTIO and the value decimal  0 (zero)
