NOTE: Archiving file servers across a WAN can also affect performance.

Cause

Enterprise Vault 8.0 introduced checkpoints for the File System Archiving task. If a volume is unable to be processed in the scheduled time a checkpoint is kept that lists the last processed folder. When the next archiving run begins, with a checkpoint file in place, the task will scan the volume until it reaches the folder that is written in the checkpoint file. It will then begin processing files for archiving from that point in the volume. On larger volumes the scan of the volume may take several hours to reach the checkpoint folder. The archiving task report will show no activity during the time the task is scanning to locate the folder in the checkpoint file. For example, if it takes two hours to reach the checkpoint folder and the schedule began processing at 10 PM, then the archiving task report will not show any activity until after 12 AM.

Typically, this issue is seen on larger volumes with very deep and wide folder structures. Increasing the archiving schedule should allow for more processing time once the checkpoint is reached. A manual run of the task should process the volume until completion on a single run unless the task is stopped. The FSARunNow command can be used to schedule the task to perform a manual archive run. For more information on FSARunNow please refer to the Utilities link in the Related Documents section.
