Problem
Provisioning type of virtual disk would be altered to Thick after restoring the virtual machine as shown in Figure 1 below.

Cause
This is due to VMware issue reported in VMware KB article kb.vmware.com/kb/1020137 and as per the KB it is fixed in vSphere 5.
Solution
Workaround:
To work around this issue, please use "Restore with thin provisioning" option in VMware Redirection properties.
