Problem
During a Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) enabled backup of a virtual machine using Backup Exec 2010 Hyper-V Agent or Agent for VMware Virtual Infrastructure (AVVI), the above mentioned exception may be logged in the backup job log if the virtual machine is running Microsoft SQL.
Error
V-79-57344-38734 - Backup Exec has discovered Microsoft SQL Server on virtual machine '\ServerName\VM\Folder\VM_Name'. You must install the Agent for Microsoft SQL Server on the media server to configure the granular recovery of SQL data or truncate the SQL logs. The Agent for Microsoft SQL Server is licensed on a per SQL server basis.
Cause
Backup Exec 2010 AVVI and Hyper-V Agent provide the GRT feature for both file system and SQL which allows to restore individual files/folders and individual SQL databases from a VMDK/VHD backup. The above exception would be generated during backup of a virtual machine hosting Microsoft SQL databases if one or more of the following conditions were true:
- Backup Exec Remote Agent is not installed on the guest machine
- Backup Exec Remote Agent is installed but the Backup exec remote agent service is not running
- A valid Backup Exec Agent for Microsoft SQL Server license is not installed on the Backup Exec 2010 media server
Solution
OR
2. Disable ALL application GRT for Hyper-V and VMware Backups. (See related documents section) if the GRT feature for SQL databases is not needed.
