==============
NEW FEATURES
==============

The following new features have been added to this release.

* Windows 7 support for DLO Agent

* PST Backup using VSS Snapshot

About Windows 7 support for the DLO Agent

Feature Overview

The DLO 6.1 MP5 Agent and all its components are compatible with the Microsoft
Windows 7 operating system, both 32-bit and 64-bit. All the features available
in NBU DLO 6.1 MP5 Agent are supported on this platform.

About PST Backup using VSS Snapshot

Feature Overview

DLO 6.1 MP5 provides a new VSS option method for taking backup of PST file(s).
This method is in addition to existing message level Incremental (MAPI) and
non-incremental (Non-MAPI) backup methods supported in DLO 6.1 MP4. The new
method uses Volume Shadow Services (VSS) framework provided by Microsoft on its
Windows platform. With DLO 6.1 MP5, Admin users have three options for PST files
backup, based on the DLO Agent versions being used. The Admin user can select
one or more options for PST file backup as part of the same profile. Multiple
selections are recommended only when there are different versions of the DLO
Agent (such as MP3/MP4/MP5) under the same profile. The multiple selections
allow earlier versions of the DLO Agent to continue using PST file backup
options which are supported by their respective releases. If all DLO Agents are
MP5 or later under the profile, then administrator can go with just VSS option
for PST file backup.

================================================================================
Selecting VSS enabled PST File Backup from the Console

An Admin user can select VSS enabled PST file backup as part of the Profile
settings during any of the following tasks:

* Creating a new profile
* Modifying an existing profile
* Modifying global options

To set up VSS-enabled PST file backup

1. On either the Profile Wizard, the Profile Properties dialog box, or the
  Options dialog box, click the check box to the left of Enable VSS backup of
  Outlook PST files after every X minutes.

  Click the Yes button on the resulting message.

2. Specify the backup scheduled time interval. The minimum interval for
  scheduled backup is 30mins.

3. Specify the number of revisions to be maintained in the Desktop User Data
  Folder (DUDF) when the DLO Agent is in offline mode and the VSS option is
  selected for PST files backup. You can specify a value from 1 to 5; the
  default value is 1.

  Note the following:

  * The DUDF must be enabled for a Profile. If the DUDF is in disabled state,
    no revisions will be maintained in the Local User Data Folder (LUDF).

  * If the DUDF and the VSS DUDF are different revisions, the DLO Agent uses
    the greater revision. For example, if the DUDF revision is 0 and the VSS
    DUDF revision is 2, then 2 revisions are maintained locally. If the DUDF
    revision is set to 10, and the VSS DUDF revision is set to 4, then 10
    revisions are maintained locally.

4. Select Ignore PST files not configured to Outlook for backup if you do not
  require backup of the PST files which are not configured to Outlook. If this
  option is not selected, such PST files are treated as normal files and are
  backed up like any other normal file (*.txt, *.doc etc).

================================================================================
DLO 6.1 MP5 Agent UI Enhancements for PST File Backup

The DLO 6.1 MP5 Agent displays the backup/restore timestamp details (pop-up
dialog box) for Outlook PST files which are recently backed up or restored. You
can access this information by clicking Recent Outlook PST file backup/restore
status on the Status window and the Restore window.

Please note the following about when and how the backup status information is
displayed:

* The VSS option must be enabled for PST file backup.

* The DLO Agent must have run at least one backup cycle.

* The current backup operation cycle overwrites the previous backup status
 information, if any.

* If you restore a PST file that was recently backed up, both the backup and
 the restore timestamp are displayed in the UI. However, if the restored file
 is not the one which was backed-up recently, the restore timestamp is not
 displayed.

If you exit the Agent and launch it again, any backup/restore timestamp details
are still available until new backup/restore operation is performed.

Note: Even if the VSS option is not enabled as part of the Profile settings,
     these links still appear on the Agent UI. However, clicking on these links
     but will not show any information.

================================================================================
Enabling logging for VSS-enabled PST file backup

Use the following procedure if you want to enable verbose logging for the VSS
option.

To enable logging for the VSS option

1. Add the following registry key to enable verbose logs (dlovssrequestoru.log)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Symantec\Components\debugstream\DLOvssRequestorU.exe

  The default value must be 0xFFFFFFFF.

2. The default location for the dlovssrequestoru.log log file is
  \DLO_Installation_Path\Logs.

Backward compatibility

DLO 6.1 MP5 allows the Admin user to select more than one option for a PST file
back up from the console UI as part of same profile. This allows earlier
versions of DLO Agents (such as MP3 or MP4) to continue using the MAPI or
Non-MAPI methods.

================================================================================
Advantages of VSS-enabled PST file backup

The following section describes some of the advantages to using VSS-enabled PST
file backup.

=========================================
No or minimal requirement for local disk space

The existing Non-MAPI implementation of PST file backup makes use of the LUDF,
which impacts the end user’s disk space and creates overhead when data is
move from PST to the LUDF.

When a DLO Agent that uses the VSS option is connected to the network (in online
mode), no local copy of PST file is stored in the LUDF, which means that no
additional local disk usage is required. A full copy of the PST is maintained on
the DLO File Server on the first backup. On subsequent backup, either the
changes or full revision is maintained on the file server, based on the profile
settings. Only the delta map file is maintained in the LUDF (even if the DUDF
revisions are set to 0 for the profile), which is generally of negligible size.

Even if the delta map setting is not set for the profile, the VSS option does
not require local disk usage because the entire PST file is sent to the
DLO FileServer.

When a DLO Agent that uses the VSS option is not connected to the network (in
offline mode), it needs to maintain the backup copy of the PST file locally. In
this case, LUDF space is required. However, the Admin user can use Profile
settings to limit the requirement of local disk usage by specifying the number
of revisions (minimum value is 1 and maximum is 5) to be maintained in the
LUDF. The number of revisions will not grow more than the specified limit.
If the limit is exceeded, earlier revisions will be groomed to make space for
new revisions. After the DLO Agent comes online, the latest revisions are sent
to the DLO File Server, based on the revision limit specified for the VSS
option in the Profile settings.

Maintaining local revisions when the DLO Agent is in offline mode provides
flexibility to agent users because they can restore the PST at any point of time.

Note:  For VSS-enabled backup when the Agent is offline, the Administrator must
      enable the Desktop User Data Folder (DUDF) for a Profile if revisions
      must be maintained locally.

=========================================
Ensure backup of consistent PST files

When Outlook is updating the source PST file, it makes the source PST files
unusable for any other application. Backing up a PST file at such a time backs
up an inconsistent PST file. If a user restores such an inconsistent PST file
and configures it with Outlook, Outlook may not able to open the PST file
properly. Such PST files needs to be repaired (using standard utilities like
scanpst.exe) in order for it to be usable.

DLO takes extra precautions to ensure that it performs the backup of PST files
when it is in a consistent, usable state. VSS-enabled backups offer backup at
periodic, configurable intervals. When the backup is triggered at a scheduled
interval, DLO checks for source PST file consistency. It will back up only
source PST files in a consistent state. If the source PST file is in
inconsistent state, DLO attempts the backup after every three minutes until it
finds that the source PST file is in a consistent state. DLO makes the attempt
up to a maximum of five times during one scheduled backup interval cycle. If
all of the attempts are unsuccessful, DLO attempts the backup at the next
scheduled interval and follows the same logic.

=========================================
Known issues related to PST file backup in MAPI and Non-MAPI methods are
addressed

* Unlike the MAPI and Non-MAPI methods, which do not fully support operations
 such as Shift/Delete of an item or folder or renaming of folders in the backup
 copy of a PST file, the VSS option allows all modifications that can be done
 on a source PST file.

* Initial VSS-enable PST backups are much faster than MAPI-based backups.

* The VSS option allows PST revisions to be maintained, unlike MAPI-based PST
 backups.

================================================================================
Constraints/Limitations of VSS-enabled PST file backup

* Interval-based protection for PST files is not supported. The Admin user needs
 to schedule the backup interval time in the Console. However, the agent user
 can perform the PST backup at any point in time by performing a manual from
 the Agent UI.

* If a user has set any Global Exclude rules for PST files settings for email,
 the VSS option does not apply them.

* Suspend is supported for the VSS option, but resumes re start the backup job.
 You can define the resume interval, and the next backup will start at the
 defined interval.

* Help Topics/Administrator Guides are not updated for DLO 6.1 MP5.

* FAT32 file systems are not supported because the VSS framework does not
 support FAT32 file systems. For such file systems, users must use existing
 message level Incremental or Non-Incremental PST file backup options.

* If the VSS option is enabled on a DLO Agent and the user on the Agent UI
 selects folder on a FAT32 drive for the backup selection, the users sees
 a message that includes the fact that FAT32 file systems are not supported.

* If the Admin user selects the VSS option as part of the Profile Settings in
 the DLO Console UI, a message appears stating that PST Backup using VSS is not
 supported on FAT32 file systems.

================================================================================
Requirements of VSS-enabled PST file backup

The following sections provide information on requirements for the new VSS
option.

=========================================
Volume Shadow Copy service enabled

To use the VSS option, Volume Shadow Copy service must be running on the Agent
in an enabled state (either manual or automatic). If the service is disabled,
the user must enable this service on the system.

Note: The DLO Agent does not enable the Volume Shadow Copy (VSS) service if it
     is disabled.

To determine the state of the Volume Shadow Copy service on the user’s system

1. Choose Start > Run and type services.msc. Click OK.

2. In the Services window, select the Standard tab.

3. Locate Volume Shadow Copy in the alphabetical list. Look at the Startup Type
  column.

  If the service is enabled, the Startup Type is either as Manual or Automatic.
  If it is not enabled, the Startup Type is Disabled.

To enable Volume Shadow Copy service

1. On the Services window, right-click the Volume Shadow Copy service and
  select Properties.

2. On the General tab, select either Manual or Automatic from the Startup Type
  drop down menu. Automatic is recommended.

Note: If the Volume Shadow Copy service is Enabled, but the status is Stopped,
     the DLO Agent will start the service when the backup job is triggered.
     After the service is started, the DLO Agent will not stop.

=========================================
Hard disk space requirement for shadow copies on a volume

When you enable shadow copies on a volume, you can specify the maximum amount of
volume space to be used for the shadow copies. The limit is configurable; the
default value is 10 percent of the source volume (the volume being copied).

Refer to the following article for more information:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc728305(WS.10).aspx.

The DLO Agent uses some of the total hard disk space allocated for enabling
shadow copies for a volume at the time of creating the volume snapshot (shadow
copy). After the snapshot is deleted, this hard space is released for system
use.  The DLO Agents delete the snapshot as soon as the backup is complete of
the PST files available on that volume.

=======================
DOWNLOADING DLO 6.1 MP5
=======================

Use the following procedure to download DLO 6.1 MP5.

To download DLO 6.1 MP5

1. Download one or both of the following files into a temporary directory:

  NBU_DLO_61_5_M_x64_<six_digit_number>.zip
  NBU_DLO_61_5_M_x86_<six_digit_number>.zip

2. To extract the file, double-click it.

  This action creates a number of files that include x64.README, x86.README
  and Setup.exe.

===================================
INSTALLING AND UPGRADING TO 6.1 MP5
===================================

Use the instructions in the following sections to install or upgrade DLO.

================================================================================
Installing NBU DLO 6.1 MP5

This installation package can be used to install a new DLO Administration
Server or to upgrade an already existing DLO Administration Server. For a new
installation, see the NetBackup Desktop/Laptop Option Administrator's Guide for
detailed instructions.

================================================================================
Upgrading to DLO 6.1 MP5

The DLO 6.1 MP5 installer works similarly to previous updates. The installer
detects all of the installed feature components and updates them to the
new version.

When you upgrade from any previous DLO version, the existing components are
first uninstalled, and then reinstalled.

Note the following when upgrading existing version of DLO to MP5:

* Existing Profile settings are retained after upgrading. The VSS option is not
 enabled by default. The Administrator must edit existing profile settings or
 create a new profile with the VSS option enabled.

 For example, after an upgrade, DLO 6.1 MP3 or DLO 6.1 MP4 Agents retain their
 PST backup setting. If before the upgrade the MP4 Agent was using MAPI method
 for PST backup, then it will continue using MAPI method after the upgrade.

* After upgrading to MP5, if you select the VSS option and if the LUDF revisions
 number is also specified, DLO does not maintain new revisions in the LUDF as
 long as the previous mirror copy of the PST file (created using a MAPI or
 Non-MAPI method) is present.  Note that backups continue to happen in the
 Network User Data Folder (NUDF) using the VSS option. DLO does not delete the
 previous mirror copy of PST file in the LUDF because the end user may want to
 use it later.

 This behavior can also be seen even after upgrade to MP5. For example, if the
 last backup for the PST file was performed with the MAPI or Non-MAPI method
 and you change it to the VSS option. DLO created a mirror copy of PST file in
 the LUDF in both MAPI (when the number of revisions in the DUDF is set to 1
 or more) and Non-MAPI (even if the number of revisions in the DUDF is set
 to 0).

 To make new revisions to the LUDF when using the VSS option, the mirror copy
 of PST file, if any, needs to be deleted from the LUDF folder. You can do
 this in the following ways:

 * (Recommended) When selecting a new method for PST file backups in the
   Profile settings, the Administrator can set the option  to Discard all the
   revisions on DUDF which are older than n days. DLO then deletes the mirror
   copy after specified number of days have elapsed.

 * The end user can delete the mirror copy manually from the LUDF folder.

================================================================================
Upgrading DLO desktop agents

Always back up your database before you upgrade. See the "Backing Up and
Restoring the DLO File Server and Database" section in the NetBackup
Desktop/Laptop Option Administrator's Guide for specific instructions to back up
your database.

When you upgrade an existing installation, you must upgrade the DLO
Administration Server before you upgrade Desktop Agents. Close the NetBackup DLO
Console before starting the server upgrade process. Browse to the root folder on
the installation CD and run setup.exe from that location. The upgrade proceeds
as described in the Administrator's Guide.

You must upgrade the Desktop Agent software to take advantage of the fixes and
new features in this maintenance pack, although older versions will continue to
function.

Administrative permissions are required on the desktop computer to run the
upgrade.

Note:  To upgrade Desktop Agent from the DLO Administration Console, refer to
      the step-by-step instructions in the "Updating DLO" section of the
      NetBackup Desktop/Laptop Option Administrator's Guide.

To upgrade the Desktop Agent directly from the Desktop Agent computer

1. From the desktop computer, browse to the network server where the
  installation files for the Desktop Agent are stored. The default location is
  \\DLO_Administration_Server_name\DLOAgent.

2. Run setup.exe.

3. You will see a message if the Volume Shadow Copy service is disabled on the
  DLO Agent system, you see the following message:

  The new DLO VSS component (DLOvssRequestor.exe) on the Agent is responsible
  for taking the VSS snapshot. The installer deploys the correct DLO VSS
  component for each supported platform, but the Volume Shadow Copy service on
  the DLO Agent determines how the DLO VSS component works. For the DLO VSS
  component to function, the Volume Shadow Copy service must be enabled on the
  DLO Agent system.

  Click Yes to enable the Volume Shadow copy service and continue with
  installation process.

  Click No or Cancel if you  DLO installer will not enable the Volume Shadow
  copy service but will continue with installation process.

============
KNOWN ISSUES
============

This section describes known issues that exist in DLO 6.1 MP5. The issues are
listed by ET number (software bug tracking number).

ET1904465: Source PST gets corrupted when restore is done without closing
          Outlook

This problem occurs in the following scenario:

1. Launch Outlook.
2. Create a PST file in the DLO backup selection.
3. Launch the DLO agent.
4. The initial backup occurs for the newly created PST.
5. Restore the PST to an alternate location.
6. Open the restored PST from the outlook

The issue is reproducible on both Outlook 2003 and 2007, but is consistent on
Outlook 2003.

The issue occurs when the PST file is restored immediately and configured with
Outlook when the source PST is still open. If any operation is performed on the
source PST before configuring the backup PST, no problem is seen.

To resolve this issue, after the PST file is restored to an alternate location
(after step 5), close Outlook and reopen it. Proceed with configuring the
restored PST file with Outlook.

ET1931449: If no email options are selected on a Profile, recent Outlook PST
          backup/restore status link is still available for the Agent.

This problem occurs in the following scenario:

1. If VSS option is not enabled as part of Profile settings (in Console UI)OR
  if none of the “Mail  Option” (VSS \MAPI \ Non-MAPI) is selected as
  part of Profile settings (in Console UI)

2. Launch the agent which has got the above profile.

This is a cosmetic issue in the Agent UI. It does not impact any other
functionality.

ET1951328: Recent backup status displays the backup completion time stamp, and
          the restore wizard displays the backup start time stamp.

On the Restore tab, though the Column Name suggests "Date Backed up," the actual
time stamp is the date and time when that backup is initiated.

For a VSS PST backup, when a user clicks Recent Outlook PST Backup/Restore
status, the time displayed is the actual date and time when the backup
completes, not the time when the backup is initiated.

Any file present on the disk has following time stamps:

* The File Creation time stamp is when the file was created on the disk.

* The File Last Modification time stamp is when the file was last modified on
 the disk.

* File Last Accessed time stamp is when the file was last accessed on the disk.

The Date Backed up column in Restore tab refers to File Creation time. The
Recent Outlook PST Backup/Restore status link displays the completion time
stamp, which should match the File Last Modification or File Last Accessed
time stamp.

ET1961843: After a VSS-enable backup is suspended, the job does not resume for
          a delta-enabled backup selection. This problem is seen in a
          particular scenario when the VSS option is enabled, the DUDF is set
          to 0, and delta is enabled.

This is cosmetic issue related to the DLO Agent UI. The job does actually resume
according to the interval set by the user, even though the resume is not visible
in the Agent UI.

The user can verify if the backup resumed and completed successfully by checking
the Restore View. If the backup file is present, the resume operation did happen
and completed successfully.

ET1965436: The Recent Outlook PST file backup status link in the DLO Agent UI
          does not display the PST backup time stamps if both FAT and NTFS
          drives are under backup selection.

This problem occurs in the following scenario:

1. A backup selection exists for PST files on an NTFS drive and a backup
  selection for normal files on a FAT drive.

2. The user modifies a file on the FAT drive and modifies the configured PST
  file. The user then runs the backup job manually.

3. The user clicks the link Recent outlook PST file backup status (only for VSS)
  on the Status or Restore window.

Rather than receiving the backup time stamp, you see a pop up message box
stating, "This information is available only for VSS backup."

ET1968340: If the DLO Agent is refreshed or any changes are made to the Profile
          when the PST job is in retry, the Backup/Restore status displays the
          old time stamp.

This is cosmetic issue related to the DLO Agent UI. The backup is occurring
correctly, even though the UI is not clearing the last backup time stamp.

ET1968353: If the Backup selection has subfolders, and only one PST file is
          modified, DLO runs backups for all other PST files in the subfolders.

This problem occurs when PST files are stored in subfolders or nested folders
under same parent folder. For example, a user may have the following PST files:

C:\Personal\MyPST1.Pst
C:\Personal\Friends\MyFriends.Pst
C:\Personal\Family\MyFamily.Pst

To avoid the problem, maintain PST files either in the same folder or in
different folders that are not subfolders or nested folders of the parent
folder, as in the following example:

C:\Personal\MyPst1.pst
C:\Friends\MyFreinds.pst
C:\My Data\Family\MyFamily.pst

ET1951328: When a job is suspended in retry mode, it runs at predefined retry
          interval of three minutes rather than the interval defined during
          the Suspend job.

When a job is in retry mode and at the same time a backup is happening, if the
job is suspended for a duration which is longer than the three-minute retry
interval,  it resumes automatically after three-minute without regard to the
resume interval defined for suspended job.

ET1969654: After upgrading the DLO Agent, the upgrade popup appears whenever the
          Agent is launched, followed by an occasional forced reboot.

This issue is very rarely observed. However, it is recommended to save and close
all other applications on the desktops and laptops before upgrading the DLO
agent. When the forced reboot occurs, it usually happens after a DLO Agent
upgrade.

ET1971021: Automated DLO Agent upgrade does not work on Windows Vista.

When you launch the automated DLO Agent upgrade on Windows Vista clients, the
agent is not upgraded.

This issue exists because the system services are isolated from user
applications and run as separate sessions. Any interactive interface for the
system services is unavailable to the user.

To interact with the service, the Interactive Services Detection service in
Windows Vista presents a dialog. The dialog switches the user to the session
where the service is running.

By default, the service is run manually. You need to start the service manually
or set it to run automatically. To avoid this problem, before you upgrade the
DLO agent on a Windows Vista client, start the Interactive Services Detection
service on the client.

TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS
====================

This section describes some issues that you may experience.

=========================================
DLO installer displays "Error 1321. The installer has insufficient privileges to
modify the file C:\ProgramFiles\Symantec\NetBackupDLO\Data\DLO.mdf.

Explanation

This error occurs if you uninstall the DLO server and attempt to reinstall it to
the same location with a SQL Server 2005 database.

When you uninstall the DLO server, the database files (DLO.mdf and DLO_log.LDF)
are not deleted. When you attempt the reinstallation, the DLO installer uses
these database files instead of installing new versions. These files require
full rights to be used.

Normally, the Administrator has full rights to these files. However, the error
may still occur.

Resolution

Make the following changes to each file:

* Right-click on the file and select Properties.

* On the Security tab, grant full rights to the Administrators group.

=========================================
Upgrade to DLO 6.1 MP5 fails if the Service Control Manager is open.

Resolution

To avoid this issue, always close the Service Control Manager whenever you
install, uninstall, or upgrade DLO.

=========================================
When upgrading from DLO 6.1 MP4 to MP5, the following error occurs:
"Another application has exclusive rights to C:\~xpdloshareu.log.

Explanation

This problem occurs when the DLO database service is running while you upgrade
to DLO 6.1 MP5. To resolve this issue, stop the DLO database service. Then,
on the error message page, click Retry.

Resolution

Always stop all DLO services before you start the upgrade.

=========================================
MP5 Agent is not able to back up PST files using VSS, even though VSS feature
is enabled in for that user.

Resolution

* Ensure that Volume Shadow Copy service is enabled on the user's system.

* If the VSS service is enabled, the PST file may reside on FAT32 drive.
 VSS-enabled backups are not supported on FAT32 file system.
