Problem
How to import Backup Exec media into NetBackup.
Solution
Physical inventory:
The inventory is run by using the vmphyinv command. A 'normal' inventory MUST NOT be run when importing Backup Exec media.
There are various different options when running vmphyinv, for example :
vmphyinv -rn <Robot_Number> -d <density> -slot_list s1:s2:...sN
vmphyinv -rn <Robot_Number> -d <density> -slot_range <from> <to>
The physical inventory mounts and reads the Backup Exec tape and assigns the media to the BackupExec pool. If the BackupExec pool does not exist, vmphyinv creates it. It also updates the GUID of the tape.
The remaining steps are very similar to the import of a regular NetBackup tape.
One important difference is the order that he tapes are imported in during the 'Phase 1' import. With BackupExec media that spans multiple tapes, the first tape in the backup set HAS to be imported first, and then the remain tapes can be imported in any order.
This is different to NetBackup media where during 'Phase 1', the media can be imported in any order.
Phase 1 import:
Select the Catalog Option in Admin Console and type the BackupExec Media ID. In the Media Server field, specify the name of the host that contains the media to import. This media server becomes the media owner. From the Action Menu Select Initiate Import. This process will run the Phase I import.
Phase 2 import:
Search for the backup images that you would want to import and run the Phase II import on the required media.
Additional notes:
See the NetBackup Commands reference guide for vmphyinv command options.
The Phase I and Phase II import procedures are explained in detail in the Technote TECH43584 (see below) and in the NetBackup administrator's guide.
Not all Backup Exec media can be imported into netbackup. See the supportability statement below.
