A license key is not being created or does not appear to be available for Continuous Protection Server (CPS) in Backup Exec 2010

Solution

In Backup Exec 11d to 12.5, a separate license key for the Remote Agent for Windows Servers was required during the installation of the Continuous Protection Server to unlock the CPS functionality. This license key was provided separately with all Backup Exec Agents and was provided with the original Backup Exec licenses at the time of purchase.

In Backup Exec 2010, the separate license key for the Remote Agent for Windows Servers is no longer required. The licensing requirements for CPS are as follows:

  • The Continuous Protection Agent (CPA) is intended to be installed on each server to protect continuously. It is licensed on a per-server basis. For Backup Exec 2010, the right to use CPA is now included in all Backup Exec 2010 Agents.

  • The Continuous Protection Server controls all of the CPAs and the backup destinations. The Continuous Protection Server is included with the license for each Backup Exec 2010 media server. A license key for the Remote Agent for Windows Systems or any database or application agent can also be used to unlock the CPS functionality for any CPA.

For example, to continuously protect two remote file servers with one remote Exchange server with Backup Exec 2010 CPS, the following licenses are required:

  • 1 license for Backup Exec 2010 media server (this license includes the right to use Continuous Protection Server).

  • 2 licenses for the Remote Agent for Windows Systems (this license includes the right to use Continuous Protection Agent).

  • 1 license for Backup Exec Agent for Microsoft Exchange Server (this license includes the right to use the Remote Agent for Windows Systems and the Continuous Protection Agent).

Resolution:

During installation of CPS, enter the license key for Backup Exec 2010 media server, Remote Agent for Windows Systems, or any database or application agent.
