Problem
Installation of SQL Express 2005 fails the error: "Failed to install SQL Express BKUPEXEC instance with error 1706."
Error
Error 1706: An installation package for the product Microsoft SQL Server Setup Support Files cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'sqlsupport.msi'
Solution
While installing Backup Exec, the installation of SQL Express 2005 may fail with the error "Failed to install SQL Express BKUPEXEC instance with error 1706." if Backup Exec is installed on a server that has an existing MSDE or SQL instance already present.
The following error message will appear in BKUPINST.LOG:
<time stamp>: V-225-53: ERROR: Failed to install SQL Express BKUPEXEC instance with error 1706. ***To search for information about this error, click here.
<time stamp>: Please review C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Summary.txt for more details.
<time stamp>: Failed to install third party products.
The C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Summary.txt will give the error:

Error Number : 1706
To work around this problem:
1. Uninstall the Microsoft SQL Server Setup Support Files by using Add or Remove Programs as shown below.
2. Run setup for Backup Exec again
